Vancouver Canucks Drafting History

In anticipation for tomorrow's big day (hockey's version of Christmas), I came across this link that shows every player drafted by the Canucks.. and I'm speechless at how atrocious some of the years were (in particularly, the early to mid 2000's).

http://canucks.nhl.com/club/draftstats.htm?location=/draft&round=All&team=VAN&year=All

You hope that within each draft, you can get at least one player (especially in the first round) that will have an impact in some way on this team. In particular, looking at the draft picks from 2007 is mind-numbing, despite it being a weak draft. I guess this is what happens when you go for "Off-board" picks and when our scouting department was clueless.

Which years do you guys think were the best / worst?

Best: 2004 / 1999

Worst: 2007

Potential Best: 2013

It's hard to say in terms of recent years. We still have some wild cards. Jensen is taking a while and needs to make the team soon. Gaunce is looking good, but might peak out as a good third-line centre.

Shinkaruk may be good, but he's not there yet, so it's hard to say. Virtanen is in the same boat, though he's a year younger.

Horvat is the one recent great 1st rounder.

As for the later rounds, guys like Grenier (3rd round in 2011), Cannata (6th round in 2009), Corrado (5th round in 2011), Hutton (5th round in 2012), Subban (4th round in 2013), and Cassels (3rd round in 2013) could all be steals. McCann and Demko are wild cards but could also be great.

It's safe to say that Nonis was the one at the helm for a lot of our poor drafting.

I still remember my reaction to the drafting of Patrick White. "WHAT?!" "WHO??!!" It took me three minutes to find his name in my THN Draft preview magazine. A high-schooler who hardly dominated at his level. That may have been the final nail on Nonis's coffin as Canucks gm.

Compared to our draft history, Benning's first draft will only need 2 players to play at an NHL level in order for it to be considered the best LOL...

Yea I had the same reaction. This is why I stopped watching the Draft, until Benning came on board. Some of these picks were so off-the-board, maybe the Scout department picked names out of a hat. Ridiculous and it is the main reason we have had limited success.

Agreed Nonis and Gillis had a poor record over that period. Gillis finally had a good draft in 2013 but too little, too late.

I'd like to know what year it was (during the Gillis years) when the Canucks tripled their scouting budget. I have a feeling it correlates to the sudden increase in decent picks.

If you where to say the average career for an NHL player was 10 years which it isn't its much less I believe. You would have to average 2.3 of your draft picks making the NHL an average of 10 years.. We acomplished that once in the last twenty years ouch.

It's easy to look back in hindsight at what a bust he was, but for what it's worth ISS had him at #23 & we picked him @ #25. He was billed as a physical center with skill & wasn't an "off the board" kind of pick.. He also eventually helped get us Ehrhoff too so he ended up having some value.

From his 2007 scouting profile:

Central Scouting Report: A skilled forward with the ability to make a difference… strong player with a physical presence… plays tough in the corners and in traffic… is good on the right wing and gets his wrist shot off with ease… sometimes lacks urgency in his play.

Hockey Profile: Named Associated Press Player of the Year for Minnesota boys hockey in 2007… named to the All-Tournament Team of the Class AA State Championships in 2007 after leading his team to the title game for the second consecutive year… had 36 points (11-25-36) in 17 games with Grand Rapids after missing the beginning of the season with an injury… played 12 games with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL in 2007 registering nine points (8-1-9)… will attend the University of Minnesota in the fall… selected to play in the 2007 Under-18 World Championships.

Jim Benning expects at least two NHL'ers from every draft so using that as a measuring stick, there are several bad years in there. Especially 2002, 2007 and maybe 2010.
