Ja Morant Suspended for 25 Games After Second Gun Video

The N.B.A. suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant for 25 games without pay to start the 2023-24 season after a league investigation found that he had posed with a gun in a video streamed on social media for the second time in just over two months.

Morant was suspended for eight games after the first video in March. On Friday, N.B.A. Commissioner Adam Silver said it was “alarming and disconcerting” that Morant had repeated his behavior after telling the league and the public that he wouldn’t.

“The potential for other young people to emulate Ja’s conduct is particularly concerning,” Silver said in a statement Friday morning announcing the new punishment. “Under these circumstances we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated.”

A few hours later, the N.B.A. players’ union pushed back against the discipline, calling it “excessive and inappropriate.”

25 games is generous.  Does the players' union want a repeat of the Arenas incident, or worse?

Ja was repeating behaviour that got him suspended the first time.  Meaning, he is a repeat offender.  Meaning that his punishment should be increased.  Meaning the minimum would be double digit games.  Meaning that if he continues down this path, half or more season suspensions are now on the table.  Meaning he better be a good boy, or he's gonna hurt real bad.

The union has to say what they said, but they really don't have much of anything to stand on here.

I read that the Union isn't happy about this either as it's a bad look for them too.  A lot of them have clean images and tons of endorsement deals on that line.  Thinking is, Ja is hurting that image and dollars with continued f ups.

Pretty good deal for the GOAT.  Turn $275 million into billions.  And retain a minority stake.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/37863644/sources-michael-jordan-finalizing-charlotte-hornets-sale

Sources: Michael Jordan agrees to sell Hornets stake for $3B

I was recently reading about Gabe Plotkin - one of the guys who's buying the Hornets.

He's the financier who got squeezed (for hundreds of millions of dollars) while trying to short-sell Gamestop a few years ago.

Looks like he's recovered okay.

I will be cheering against them then.

From the article:

"After completing the first season of a five-year, $251 million contract, Beal's standing as the NBA's only current player to have a no-trade clause negotiated into his deal gave him the ability to control not only possible destinations, but how a potential package to acquire him impacted his new supporting cast."

How is it that every other player in the NHL (or so it seems) has a no-trade clause in their contract and the NBA has only this guy?  NBA agents falling down on the job?

Not enough touches to go around in Phoenix.

This will probably backfire on them, chemistry wise.

Whose their starting PG now? Cameron Payne?

I still like Denver better as long as they can keep Bruce Brown. I'm doubtful about it.

The NBA Draft is on Thursday.

The #1 pick will be Victor Wembanyama.

Here's a few excerpts about him from "The Athletics" Draft Guide:

"Wembanyama is the highest-upside prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James."

"He is a historic prospect, one well within the tapestry of former elite big prospects such as Bill Walton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan."

"It is somewhat easy to envision Wembanyama’s upside as being the best player on planet Earth someday,"

Not much pressure on the young guy.  :o

Interesting that both the NHL and NBA have generational talents available at first overall....

....of course, if the Canucks' brass were running the Spurs, they'd have traded for Kyrie at the deadline....

What the limit on their draft pick transactions? Isn't NBA allowed to trade draft picks 8 years into the future or something crazy like that?

What’s up with bottom dwelling teams giving up good assists to superior teams for nothing?

Wizards gave up Beal and Porzigis for a couple of 2nd round picks, Tyus Jones (the only good value), Chris Paul (who is probably going to be bought out), Danilo Gallinari, and Mike Muscala.

Cap space! Most of those guys are expiring.

Heh Stu Jackson for GM of the century!

Though Stu Jackson kind of had some small revenge on the guy that gave him the finger (Steve the talking Mule Francis).  I'm pretty sure it was him that kept Francis off Team USA.
