The group play portion of the tournament will run from November 3-28, with Tuesday and Friday games counting towards the standings (there will be no games on Election Night on November 7).

By "standings", do they mean regular season standings or tournament standings?

The winner of each group, along with the highest-finishing team that didn't win a group, will advance to the knockout rounds.

Since there are six groups, shouldn't they be adding the two highest-finishing teams?  Otherwise there will only be seven teams in the quarterfinals.

No mention of Vancouver but who knows?

Adam Silver: NBA to weigh expansion in coming years, consider Las Vegas, Seattle, others

Adam Silver gave his latest indications that the NBA will heavily weigh expansion in upcoming years, if not coming closer to saying that it will be coming to the league.

Silver cautioned against any expectations that the league will act with any haste. It must first finish off its next media rights deal — its exclusive negotiating window with its current TV partners ends next April and this TV deal ends after the 2024-25 season — before it moves on to considering expansion.

Seattle and Las Vegas are the two cities that have been floated most heavily as possible expansion sites for the NBA.

NBA to implement flopping penalty, expand use of coach challenge

The NBA Board of Governors has approved two new gameplay changes for the 2023-24 season, the league announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:

The NBA will implement an in-game penalty for flops, resulting in a technical foul free throw.

Teams will also be awarded a second coach’s challenge if the first challenge is successful.

Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, was rushed to the hospital after having a medical emergency during a basketball workout at USC's Galen Center on Monday. The 18-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest, according to a report from TMZ.

The incident occurred Monday morning, with a 911 call reportedly being made around 9:30 a.m. PT. Bronny James was reportedly unconscious upon ambulance arrival, per TMZ, but is now in stable condition and no longer in the ICU, according to a statement issued to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

"We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information," the statement said. "LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes."

Bronny James was a top recruit out of Sierra Canyon high school, averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists last season. He committed to USC over Ohio State and Oregon in May, becoming the first "first one out of the James Gang to go to college," his father said.

Basketball seems to me the "easiest" to "fix" the result (only really have to 'pay off one or two players' that aren't bench sitters) of the 'big leagues'.

Probably.  But given athletes' salaries nowadays, you'd have to pay the players an awful lot for them to jeopardize their careers.

Or a ref.  Lol

Basketball is the closest to pure skill in team sports.   The best players play most of the game and are involved in most plays.  They are typically the ones who get the game tying/winning shots.

Hockey is the closest to pure luck.  The best players are at best on the ice for 1/3rd of the game and are not always on the ice for game tying/winning goals.

I'd bribe an NFL kicker if I wanted to rig a game.  Easier for them to make it look like they just missed a clutch kick, can't be substituted, and low pay relative to teammates.

The sports world was informed on Tuesday morning about a terrifying situation regarding the health of Bronny James, the son of NBA megastar LeBron James. And unfortunately, billionaire Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s first reaction to the situation appeared to be to push a conspiracy theory on social media.

On Tuesday morning, news broke that Bronny James had to be rushed to the hospital after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest during a recent workout with the USC Trojans basketball team, where he recently signed to continue his basketball career.

Shortly after the news broke, Elon Musk took to social media where he baselessly suggested that there could be a link between Bronny’s scary medical scare and the COVID-19 vaccine.

“We cannot ascribe everything to the vaccine, but, by the same token, we cannot ascribe nothing. Myocarditis is a known side-effect. The only question is whether it is rare or common,” Musk said in a tweet.

how did someone as stupid as Musk end up with all that money?

He wouldn't have all that money if he wasn't born into money.

Full credit for turning those millions into billions but "You can't start a fire without a spark" (Springsteen).

Ahhh yes.  The kid in me was pretty sad when the Grizzlies left town as we didn't really get a chance to let the fandom set in.  Poor management aside, we can definitely sustain a team and can even be the "gateway" to asia.  Seattle is definitely getting their team back, so it's down to Vegas and Vancouver as a plausible but distant third.  I hope one day we'll get our team back.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/basketball/article-vancouver-and-montreal-to-host-nba-preseason-games-as-part-of-ninth/

Vancouver and Montreal will be hosting NBA preseason games come October in the ninth NBA Canada Series.

The Toronto Raptors will be taking on the Sacramento Kings at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on Oct. 8.

Toronto played in both NBA Canada Series games last year, facing the Utah Jazz in Edmonton and playing the Boston Celtics in Montreal.

The Kings will have Canadian representation in forward Trey Lyles of Saskatoon and assistant coach Jordi Fernandez – the head coach of the Canadian senior men’s basketball team on their side.

Meanwhile, all-star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Hamilton and Montreal native Lu Dort lead the Oklahoma City Thunder against the Detroit Pistons at Bell Centre in Montreal on Oct. 12.

“After growing up and learning to play the game of basketball in Montreal, it will be a special experience to play a preseason game in my hometown,” Dort said in a statement.

According to the NBA, 15 teams have participated in 16 preseason games across six Canadian cities as part of the preseason series that began in 2012. The games have drawn more than 250,000 fans.

The Raptors will also host the Cairns Taipans of Australia’s National Basketball League on Oct. 15 before travelling to Chicago to face the Bulls on Oct. 17. Toronto wrap up preseason play on Oct. 20 with a home game against the Washington Wizards.
