We haven't won a cup and that is what a franchise wants. Maybe you are happy with making it to the finals and having a few presidents trophies. That's great. They'd surely be ahead of Vancouver had McDavid not missed 37 games. In a couple years McDavid will be one of the top and most interesting players in the entire league. I think pretty soon we'll dread the games we have to play the oilers. The GM of the oilers has just done a really poor job building a defence and complementary players to build a team. KariyaSakicAnderson Posted March 13, 2016 Share Posted March 13, 2016 I for one am happy with the effort and result, this is good for the young guys, no matter where the team is in the standings always play with an edge and play hard. I honestly don't care where this team finishes in the standings as long as the young guys are learning and playing the right way that's what matters and if it leads to more wins this season that's great. They will be that much more hungrier next year and whom ever the team drafts at their position that player will learn and feed off of that and hopefully be a great player for this team. They're not losing because of their high picks. You speak in certainties, that's a mistake. And these are excuses...all teams have them when they lose. They're not winning becaue of their high picks too. Doesn't matter "why"....they have the picks and they're losing. So you see how that's possible, right? No matter what the reasons are, there isn't a guaranteed formula for success...your own words tell you that. Injury. Coaching. Defense and complimentary players. So think of it this way....we're developing complimentary players as winners. That's part of the formula (too). When you count on putting all your eggs in one basket it may not work out. You're only as strong as your weakest link....so making sure these guys that are here now are doing a good job and developing skills and a desired work ethic is equally important as that draft pick. That's great, I guess you don't expect much more then that. whats in the past is in the past ,can't change that. this team is rebuilding, irregardless of its draft position jb will pick the best player available end of story! but please stop thinking that by losing the rest of this season so we can get down to maybe 5th oa ,rather than playing it out the way were goin it'll probably go 8 or 9th . do you actually yourself know the difference because reading your posts or any other pro tanker ,they all seem to think 4 or 5 oa is going to turn this team around immediately. the last team to successfully do it was pittsburg 84 and they still had to build a team around mario. we don't have to build around anyone ,we have the basis for a good team already. there's also potential for a fairly good fa signing given the cap space we have. were not that far off . The 'rookies' from years back that the Oilers obtained from high draft picks aren't able carry the team because they don't know what it takes to win in this league. In this case, I'm talking about the playoffs, since they've never experienced it. Over here in Vancouver, it's different. We have players from the 2011 team that knows what it takes to reach the Finals, and then you're surrounding the younger players with those guys. There are over 13 teams in the league that have never won a Cup so it's not like we're the only one. So if we draft Matthews are we guaranteed a Cup? Edmonton currently has FOUR number one overall picks in their lineup including a generational talent. Are they any closer to winning a cup than we are? Doubt it. And before you mention the great Oiler teams of the 80's who were my favourite team of all time do you know how many players on those Edmonton dynasty teams were top 3 picks? I'll give you a hint, ZERO. Gretzky, bought by the owner and never drafted, Messier 3rd round pick, Anderson 4th round pick, Kurri 4th round pick, Coffey 6th overall, Lowe 21st overall, Fuhr 8th overall, Tikkanen 4th round pick, Moog 7th round pick. Not one top 5 pick in the bunch. And they were able to build a dynasty. Simply amazing. And every one of their hall of fame players except Gretzky was drafted. Just not top 5. What scouts they had.
