Couldn't have started his preseason any better. It's still early and we are yet to see if he can handle NHL forwards on a consistent basis in his own zone but he was nothing but impressive in the offensive zone - something the Canucks desperately need. I posted in this thread way back about how his success will depend on how well he can round out his defensive game because the offense is certainly there already. Very good first audition and am even more stoked on him now.

I still think it would be beneficial for him to start off the year in Utica but if he keeps this up that might not be an option. Hoping for another Hutton story.

Stecher looked real good.

Got me to thinking after the game that he seems to play a Juolevi type game. I realize it's only one game, but if Stecher continues progressing, in hindsight, had JB known what he might have in Stecher,  would he still have drafted Juolevi instead of one of the skilled forwards available?

Possibly not. But the pick definitely rounds out our future defense.

In a few years five of our top six will be

Tanev

Hutton

Gudbranson

Joulevi

Stretcher

Our goaltending duo will be set

Demko

Markstrom

Now all we need to do is focus on landing top line forwards. In a few years if the sedins are still around they will be second or third line.

Xxx-xxx-xxx

Baertschi-horvat-virtanen

Sedin-sedin-Boeser

Gaunce-sutter-xxx

*THIS ISN'T A DEPTH CHART I'M JUST PLUGGING GUYS IN HYPOTHETICALLY

With a little luck through development, trades, and the draft we could land some of those top line question marks. IF the sedins stick it out a couple more years we MIGHT be able to give them a final cup run.

All in all when benning arrived we had alot more question marks than we do now. MSM  loves to harp on the Canucks but our future is alot clearer than the likes of many teams out there.  Specifically the leafs and Oilers.

Bunch of tall skinny guys playing defence. On some nights I might prefer:

Edler

Gudbranson

Sbisa

Tryamkin

Pedan

If they play a full season they can combine for 1000 hits! We'll lead the league in hits for sure!!

They could very well be in the mix too! I know that it looks like a log jam on D right now but worst case scenario we sell high on one and land a hall like forward. I don't know why but I'm very optimistic about this teams future today.

I was only able to see Stecher in the Jets game in Penticton. He stood out in that game and I had to wonder how he would do in a NHL game. IMHO he looked even better. One can argue that the Oiler lineup was not NHL but I can hardly wait to see him again. Totally agree with your point of how well he can adapt to the heavier NHL d-zone play. He engaged in physical board battles which requires some thought. All this said I still expect Stecher ends up in Utica. Benning has assets in Tryamkin, Pedan and Larrson that have to be evaluated at the NHL level as they won't clear waivers. They can put Stecher in Utica and bring him back in the spring. I'll caveat that realizing that if Stecher continues in the pre-season like last night he might force Benning's hand. It might come down to a choice between Stecher and Larsson form the get go.

As great as he looked, I still think a year with player development specialist, Travis Green would build a better foundation for the long term. Nothing bad could possibly come out of sending him down to Utica to pay his dues.

He's already had 2 seasons down there. If we leave him down there again Vegas could snatch him and we won't even know what we had in Gaunce.  I would like to see him Gaunce Granlund and Etem duke it out as much as possible with the Canucks this year. Odds are very hight that we lose one.  Let's make sure it's the right one.

Edit: OMG WHAT AN IDIOT. I THOUGHT I WAS IN THE GAUNCE THREAD...

That Vegas team has a lot to pick from. Gaunce flys under the radar.

I think both players could end up playing big roles for us, possibly even as a future pairing.

Stecher is a play driver and an offensive engine.

Juolevi is more like the fuel. His role tends to be less flashy but is still crucially important to keep all the other motors humming.

Philip Larsen needs to up his game, Stecher's coming for his job.

Stecher looked great out there tonight. I know it's only one game but if Stecher can keep the momentum up, he'll be a lock to make the Canucks.

Great game for Stecher (following an impressive camp). He's done nothing but look good since arriving here.

I'm still keeping my expectations in check, and I still think odds are he'll start in the AHL, but there's no denying he looked NHL ready on several plays tonight. That little fake and then pass on the Rödin goal was high level stuff. Tantalizing skillset with this kid. Definitely looked, tonight at least, like it's not "if" but "when" for Stecher.

Still some games to play before the final lineup decision get made (and this was only a preseason game and against the Oilers). And definitely some hurdles to overcome, given roster pressures and waiver risk. But tonight he showed glimpses of being the type of defenseman I've been hoping for years that we could somehow acquire.

I may have to revise my predictions about who makes the team. Like a lot of people I was sure that Stecher would start the season in Utica. But he was the best Canuck on the ice against the Oilers tonight. It not just that he got on the scoresheet 3 times, but he was good every time he was on the ice. And he is obviously a legitimate contender to QB the powerplay.

It is no longer obvious to me that Larsen is the better pick for third pairing RD. If Stecher continues to play like he did tonight it is hard to see how the Canucks can send him down.

Stecher's going to give Larsen a run for his money. He played real well with Edler, which on occasion is that not easy , and Edler played great with him.  It could maybe be the unit we need on the #1 PP.

You can bet that if Stecher plays well throughout preseason then JB will want to keep him on the roster. WD might want to keep Larsen, who he is familiar with, though. All really depends on how well Larsen can play from here on.

Stecher has one upped him after that game.

It feels good to have depth. Real Gud.

Also trying to keep my excitement in check but hot damn, if Stetcher can keep this up, we're either losing Larsen or trading Sbisa IMO. Kids hasn't let up on looking like the real deal yet, here's hoping he forces some hard decisions.

If the Sedins are there, gotta think Eriksson is as well. the guy's signed on for 6 years. I think his career here will outlast theirs.

Totally forgot about him lol. One less xxxx to fill.

That and I'd wager Boeser could be on the 1st line a couple years from now. We really only need a 1C until guys start retiring...

Eriksson, 1C, Boeser

Baer, Horvat, Virtanen

Sedin, Sedin, Sutter

4th could be made up of  any mix of Gaunce, Granlund, Etem, Zalewski, Labate, Cassels etc, etc...

It's going to be very interesting when we get a game where Stecher plays against true NHL level defensive zone coverage (which we didn't really see from that Oilers squad last game).

If he's in that type of game environment and can still create time and space and find lanes for open looks, then look out. If Stecher can keep rolling, and Larsen doesn't up his performance dramatically in his next couple outings, I don't think the coaches or management will be facing a tough decision at all.

Still lots of hockey to play however. And every player can have good and bad nights. But the Larsen vs. Stecher decision is quickly becoming one of the more fascinating "games within the game" during this exhibition season.

One of if not the biggest hole that needs filling is a PMD/PPQB.  Willie citing Tanev is okay if he's improved his shot, but he is still a defensive d-man and not ideal for that role, if even more effective than he has been.  Hutton is otherwise the main candidate we have along with Edler (when he's on), which is likely why they've been talking about going with 4 forwards.  Stecher can change all that.  Will see how he does as the games approach the regular season, but so far he's shown himself capable in both ends.  Utica is still an option, but he can certainly continue to develop here and it may well be in the team's best interests anyway, both short and long term.

It's pointles worrying about what Vegas may snatch. They have 29 other teams to choose from as well. If Gaunce is the worst we lose it's nothing compared to what Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington, etc stand to lose. There are a lot of teams with much better depth than us. I somehow doubt Gaunce is high in the Vegas must have list.
