Suggesting he has eclipsed Subban is premature. He likely makes the main camp and how he plays with NHL vets will be interesting. He won't make the opening roster so Utica and Travis Green are in his future which is great IMHO. Why is it it premature? Stetcher has impressed me way more than Subban. I've been rooting for the kid to make it. No one questions he's got skill. He just has yet to put his game all together. If Subban was on wing I'd think he'd have a greater chance of success.

Subban is a really likeable player but i don't think he has enough to make it to the next level as a d-man. Stecher may not either but I believe he is farther along than Subban. The idea of Subban on the wing is a really interesting one...

I want him to have one more season in the AHL, then step in as a 3rd pairing, PP specialist. (Larsens likely spot now) Stecher I see with more two way ability who can play top 4. A pairing with Hutton and Stecher could be an effective 2 way pairing. It will be interesting to see if Stecher can make it to the NHL first. I can see him joining the main group mid season after a couple of months

I'd love to see it happen - his style of play is super entertaining. IMO his best D pairing would be a guy like Gudbranson who would hang back and let him take risks. Stecher does have a more rounded game and would work well with Hutton. Only concern is physical play.

kloubek
Stecher appears very smart, and his timing in making passes seems excellent. No, he might not be a physical presence but the same could be said of a player like Tanev. Yet, Tanev plays his role so well that most of us forgive him for not being particularly physical. Now that we have guys on our blueline like Guds and Tryamkin, it allows other players to play to their strengths rather than having to do it all. Guys like Hutton and Stecher should be able to play the way they are most effective. I would argue that Stecher's best position is on a DIFFERENT line than Hutton, save for the power play, where wall-stopping size and strength isn't nearly as important as it is on 5vs5 play. And Subban - I'm rooting for this guy to make the NHL. Even for the minor leagues (which can make some players look better than they really are) his offensive prowess is impressive. He needs to put on enough size and find his defensive game as to not be a liability. If he can do that, I see him as having real dark horse potential. (No racial pun intended there). That doesn't mean he's bad but it does mean we shouldn't go comparing the two and expecting the same trajectory. The only reason i compared was because Hutton was a surprise LOL!! I didnt know he was in the running for Hobey Baker

Tystick
I think if anyone can do what Ben Hutton did last year, it's Stetcher. I didn't get to watch the YST this year, but his highlights were impressive. Juolevi looked out of place on many occasions, while Stetcher seemed comfortable and capable of making NHL plays. I'm no expert, but I'm going to predict he makes the team easily like Hutton did.

Unfortunately I was not able to see Subban play in Penticton. No doubt that things can change in the pro camp. Stecher is 22 and has played against men during his college career so from a physicality perspective is likely not that far behind Subban. I do not expect either one to make the Canuck roster and that is fine by me. Both are smaller players who have to learn a style of defense that allows them to stick in the NHL. Best teacher is TOI in the AHL. Would love to see both get some NHL games this year. My take on Stecher's game is that he plays a more physical game than Subban. Subban seems to walk the blue line more. Both are great passers and skaters.
Popular Post AlwaysACanuckFan
Found this piece on Stecher from The Province and I do feel that Canucks fans are going to love this guy. He was one of the players who stood out from the Young Stars Classic and will continue to impress at the main camp. http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-fans-are-going-to-love-troy-stecher Canucks fans are going to love Troy Stecher JASON BOTCHFORD Published: September 19, 2016 Updated: September 19, 2016 10:39 PM PDT Filed Under: The Province Sports Hockey Vancouver Canucks PENTICTON — Kyle Connor is fast, unquestionably gifted and coming off a season in which he crushed college hockey. He is among the one per cent here, one of the most talented players in Penticton. In a heartbeat, the Winnipeg Jets’ 2015 first-round pick can exploit any defenceman’s slip. He did just that when he turned Troy Stecher inside-out to start Sunday’s Young Stars game. “I turned the wrong way and I knew it immediately,” Stecher said. “He’s one of those players who is going to capitalize as soon as you make a mistake. But I got my revenge.” Stecher responded by doing what he has done all weekend. He just kept coming. Later in the first period, he pinched the puck from Connor in Vancouver’s end. A few seconds later, he had a shot on net, and on the rebound the Canucks scored. Canucks fans are going to love the never-surrender motor that drives Stecher’s game. Undrafted, and on the small side, he’s listed at 5-foot-8 here; the NHL odds are not in his favour. But there are more than a few scouts here who like his chances. “He is going to make it work, he’ll find a way,” one said. “Just watch.” When you do, you’ll see a player who is vocal, cocksure and all-in on just about every play. “He’s one of the players who always wants to be on the ice, wants to practise and loves competing,” Young Stars head coach Travis Green said. Green actually goes way back with Stecher. When he was coaching the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, the team chose Stecher in the seventh round of the bantam draft. Green was trying to recruit Stecher to come to Portland before he chose the college route instead. “Obviously, back in the day, I kind of told him to beat off,” Stecher said. Green said he didn’t remember Stecher using those words exactly. “It wasn’t that (harsh), but at the end of the day,” Green said. They can laugh about it, having now developed a really good relationship based on mutual respect. Stecher is a Travis Green kind of player if there ever was one. The 22-year-old, of course, is hoping he starts this season in Vancouver instead of Utica. With lots of NHL interest, signing the college free agent was no slam dunk for the Canucks, and what seems to have tipped the scales in their favour was the fact that Ben Hutton went from nowhere to top-four defenceman in what seemed like 15 minutes last fall. “It is important,” Stecher said. “I wanted to go to an organization that wasn’t going to sugar-coat anything. They never guaranteed anything. Other teams (came) big: ‘Oh, you’re going to play the full season next year.’ “Once you sign, they can do whatever they want with you. You have to pick and choose which people are being honest and hard-nosed with you, and that’s something I really respected about Vancouver. “They told me if I come to camp and earn a spot, then I’ll play.” Hutton said he could see in their first skate together that Stecher at least has a chance to duplicate what he did a year ago. One of the first things Hutton told the North Dakota product was, “Just don’t take my job.” Stecher has proven here he can create offensive opportunities all on his own. In Friday’s first game he snagged a puck from another talented forward, Drake Caggiula, and turned it the other way for a 2-on-1. It was a terrific moment for Stecher, who played in this town for three seasons with the BCHL’s Penticton Vees. “The only thing running through my mind was, ‘This is the first game in Penticton, there is no way I’m going to pass that puck,'” he said. Stecher grew up in the Vancouver area and was back in the city in May, when he started working out every day with Canucks veterans. The organization, which believes he can be an Andrew Ference or a Mike Weaver type, was really impressed with the gains Stecher was able to make training in the summer. They also think he’s wired like a leader. Green called his locker-room personality “infectious.” “I like to work hard,” Stecher said. “With hard work comes leadership. Guys want to follow someone who is working hard. A lot of people have doubted me because of my size.” Asked what he does to compensate, Stecher said: “A lot of the smaller skilled guys can be a bit perimeter, but I like to get into corners and fight my way around bigger guys and try to use my body to an advantage. “People think it’s a disadvantage, but being net-front, people might take my weight lightly and, last second, I’m able to push them. “With every negative there’s a positive.”
Derp...
As much as I'd like to see him on the Canucks, I would prefer he plays in Utica and we give guys like Pedan a chance to get some minutes. They've put time in the AHL to get a shot with our organization. No one from Utica has really graduated after 2 years to the NHL. Only Marky and Sven who played 1 season and half a season in the AHL. Need to start seeing what the 2 and 3 year projects are before it's too late. Grenier, Gaunce, Pedan, and so fourth.
DJSkingz
Stecher was one of the best looking Canucks in Penticton. I thought he might try to do too much, being back "home" but he did what he had to and played a strong game. I look forward to seeing what he can do in the coming seasons. I would not be surprised if he forces his way onto the roster. And if not then he can get lots of ice time playing for the Comets.

Quick nice passes. Skates well. I thought Stecher, Cassels and Joulevi were thinking position first. I don't expect Stecher to make the Canucks simply because Benning has to make choices between Sbisa, Tryamkin. Larsson, Pedan and even the forgotten man Biega. Most fans are dropping Biega down and that likely happens because of numbers and age. I think Biega is a really decent d-man but the TOI has to go to younger players. I can't see him beating Tryamkin out for a spot and without seeing Larsen play it's hard to tell but I have a feeling Stetcher will outplay Larsen and be the first guy called if they feel they want a more offensive presence. If a guy like Sbisa or Gudbranson go down then Biega or Pedan would be called on I would guess. Will be great for Stetcher to get some tims in ths AHL with Green anyhow. With a lot of luck he could be our Vatanen.
