Bo Horvat | #53 | C

Not to mention the couple of kids in the 'Zoo (probably not what they call it there) who are playing well so far for the Wings. Allows Utica players to get called up to the NHL without really destroying the talent on their own roster.

Yeah, we just go to keep adding onto that with draft picks and not trade alot of our picks for a couple years. Kind of like how Detroit does it.

lead the team in FO percentage, and it was mainly defensive and neutral zone faceoffs. that's a very good sign.

^ I think he deserves a bit more credit than that. He seemed to be around the net quite a bit, and I still think he got the goal that was credited to Dorsett.

He surprised me a bit tonight, didn't expect him to be driving into the offensive zone like he did,

I though he was a more aggressive player tonight then during pre season.

Dorsett-Horvat-Burrows 4th line with actual skill to score.

Hansen scratched.

Yikes. Our regular 4th line has a combined 6 goals (excluding Vey's 3 power play tallies) in 13 games - what more do you want out of a 4th line?! Our 4th line already had a lot of skill to score goals. Sure, adding Burrows brings more skill than Hansen, but adding Bo subtracts some skill (offense) from Vey. Our 4th line has been good all year and the pressure is on Bo to keep that up when he's in the lineup. Last night - he did great on both ends of the ice and needs to keep this up.

Came back to ask if anyone remembers that slick backhand pass Horvat made to Hansen(?). He was behind the net with an Avs player checking him and he flipped the puck back to the front of the net where one of Hansen or Dorsett got a stick on it. It was a sweet feed but I'm not sure anyone has video or a GIF of it.

It was in the recap of the game on SN as well, and Cheech, even the biggest homer of them all, saw and commented that the pass was not intended for the recipient on that play - but good on Bo for having the presence of mind to throw the puck to the front of the net where good things happen.

If this is how he plays nervous and sleep deprived I can't wait to see how he is when he settles down

I think we shold make room for him but sitting a roster regular doesn't seem the best route. I think Benning needs to make a move. Shore up the defense or secure a pick

Are you kidding? The adrenaline of playing his 1st NHL game would cancel out whatever nerves or lack of sleep he had the night before due to excitement. I do think he'll be more composed and improved, but these next three games are on the road against some very tough teams, so it may not show as such.

People saying he shouldn't make the team just for winning faceoffs, but I beg to differ. I think he should make the team if he dominates in the dot. It's something our team is bad in and desperately needs a face off expert. Other teams have a face off specialist on there team for that reason alone. It's not like he's bad in other areas, if I were him I'd focus on that role cuz it's something the canucks need

Ryan Kesler has 3G5A8P -2 in 13 games while going 53.9% on faceoffs.

Nick Bonino has 6G5A11P +6 in 13 games while going 44.6% on faceoffs.

I'd rather have Bones like I'd rather have Vey's offense over Bo's faceoff prowess.

Faceoffs are great, but once you win possession, you have to be able to do something with it. Even though Vey loses more than he wins them, he can do a lot more with the puck once he has it than Bo offensively.

Obviously, Bo isn't going up against Vey alone in trying to make this team (we can move others - Matthias, Hansen, Dorsett), but if Bo is just good at faceoffs, we don't need him. He has to bring other things, which like he did last night.

No way Bo is knocking Vey out of his spot.

Vey is very quietly becoming our break out player.

To quote some movie I can't recall, Vey is un-F@#kable.

Kes's minus stat has a lot to do with the role he plays, play against the leagues best night after night for nearly 20 minutes. That minus 2 isn't bad for someone playing in his role.

I know it really doesn't matter and I'm just glad we got the W. But still
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpnO1-z4x84

If you pause at 2:33 the puck clearly bounces off horvats stick and goes in. It is indeed his first goal. I don't know if they will count it for him, and I don't know if he cares, (probably does) but it is his goal.

Still though, thought he played a great game even with his limited minutes. Hope he keeps it up and sticks around.

it missed him entirely, from the overhead angle the only time the puck crosses horvat's body is when the puck goes over his foot, and at that point it's about 5 feet in the air

also here's it embedded:

I went frame by frame and it was a great tip by Barrie.

That's Barrie's stick... Borvat has white tape on his stick

looking again just as the puck enters the frame it does almost look like bo might have made contact, but the puck is about 2 feet over the blade of his stick at that moment (look at the other angle at 2:19). he didn't make contact, but it sure was close.

True, but it's also not that good on a top team like Anaheim. I loved Kesler in Vancouver, he's an elite-player on a level above Bonino, especially come playoff time. But tbh i'm kinda glad that he's gone. I think our 2nd line got better when we got Bonino, cuz a lot of nights, Kesler tried to do everything on his own. Bonino can at least pass the puck.
I wasn't totally sold on the trade at the point it accured. People thought we would get 2 out of Shea Theodore/Etem/their top10 pick + more good assets. Bonino had his first good season last year, at the age of 25 on a good team, so i was skeptical. Sbisa was Anaheim's scapegoat, even though he had some potential. And we also got that 1st round pick from Anaheim - though a 25th pick, which is nice, but you're not getting a spectacular prospect at that spot. But now when the season has started, i can definitely live with the trade. I like it. Bonino has been great so far. Sbisa hasn't been amazing exactly, but i think he's getting better, and i like his toolset. I wasn't stoked about the McCann pick: "Ahh well, another 2-way 2nd line center.." But it didn't take me that long to like the pick. Doesn't seem to have any major weakness.
Season is young, but i like it so far.

The comment wasn't made directed at bonino

It was directed at Horvat because bonino, Matthias, and vey aren't good at face offs.

We are one of the worst teams in the league at faceoffs.

If you look at the team and stats and if there was one area to improve on its face offs

So yes, I believe if Horvat can continue to be the best face off person on the team he should earn a spot.

We need someone to go out there win a defensive face off and change quickly, teams do it all the time and at times this season we've used henrik, but you can't just keep using henrik in all key draws.

The statement was just about Bo making the team, based on the one key role this team needs a player to step up in
