Hopes for 2017-18

Considering the Canucks are most likely going to be a lottery team next year.  Other than having better luck in the lottery, what would you like to see next season?  Is there anything the team or players need to accomplish for you to see it as a successful season?

Personally I'd like to see:

  • Stecher & Hutton get 30+ points
  • Goldobin, Boeser and Juolevi make the team for the whole season
  • Virtanen to show some improvement
  • Have at least 5 picks in the first 3 rounds
  • Markstrom play 50+ games

I'd like to see some individual improvement from our young guys and ideally a slight improvement from the team overall. It's time we slowly begin trending up now.

I'd like the line of Bo, Boeser, and Baertschi to show some good potential and Boeser to be a top 5 rookie next year. Markstrom should play more than 40 games barring any injuries.

I don't expect either Virtanen or Juolevi to make the team out of the gate, but either has the potential to surprise in training camp, particularly Virtanen.

A tandem of Markstrom and Bachman

A reasonable cap friendly contract for Gudbranson

Less injuries, otherwise replace the person who replaced Mike Burnstein

No more acquiring of 'role players' or 'culture carrying veterans' at premium prices

No more 'age gap' transactions

Trade Tanev or Edler for more picks

A kid reach 20 goals rather than being on pace for it.

Pipedream

Find a taker for the Loui Eriksson contract

Virtanen to show he can be a top 6 player rather than a bottom 6 role player.

Get a top 3 spot in the 2018 lottery

Play and tough, rugged style while the rebuild is on.

At least lose well.

I'd love that, but other than Sbisa & Gudbranson is there anyone on the roster that can play that way?  Even if Virtanen makes the team and is a beast this will be one of the softest teams in the league.  Like @Sweathog said, hopefully some size/toughness is added.  Target big 3rd/4th line guys in free agency.

Only problem is with your 'Pipedream':

- To early on Erickson but if it came to that there would be a market

- Not expecting Virtanen to play the whole season in Vancouver. I will be happy to see him as a 3rd line player with a physical game and solid d-zone coverages.

- Not only is a Top 3 likely in 2018 but also in 2019. It depends on injuries and whether Benning can bring back a significant piece for either Tanev or Edler.

Haha, that's a good one. The Canucks could come in dead last the next two seasons and will still wind up with two 4th overall picks.

That's still preferable to being a bubble team and picking 11th. A guaranteed top 5 I'll be on board with

I think the earlier we move Loui the better. While he is still effective, probably in year 2-3

Loui Eriksson has a NMC

So unless he wants to leave we can't trade him

if Juolevi can remain steady and help pot a couple and Dahlen makes an impact at the nhl level I'm predicting we will be battling for a playoff spot into feb-Mar

aside from that

Boeser to pot 25+

Virtanen to eventually earn a call up (maybe be the go to call up)

Horvat to continue and not pleateau due to harder comp

Demko continues to build on another strong season

if our 5th pick from this year is in the ahl - I hope utica pushes for playoffs again

if Suban can get a shot at the nhl

a tanev or edler  is traded this offseason

greener lights a fire under edler if he remains here

hoping we win a lotto selection next season

etc

etc

etc

Another year like this season and I'm guessing he'd consider waiving.

As per op's question,  would be great to see:

-BoHo take yet another step in his overall game.

-Bearcheese and Granny both reach 20g's

-Virt come into camp in tremendous conditioning and be a contributing line-up regular

-overall see the d stay healthy and the kids back there continue to develop

-see both OJ and Demko get some NHL game action

Linden, Benning and even Aqua have admitted that rough times are ahead, due to the fact that they will not be acquiring anymore high priced UFA's, nor trading for anymore "Age Gap" players.

Eriksson ( If he is moved ) will be moved in the last 2 years of his contract, same as Sutter.

I have a feeling Benning when he did up their contract paid them both 500k'ish more than what someone else may give them in exchange for having limited trade clauses, so as to give the team the flexibility to move on from them at a time when the team will have it's new core mostly ready to compete.

Everyone piles on Benning for not being Gillis/Gillman and "Overpaying" but if you look at how he has strucutred the term, amount and clauses of players signed the team has flexibility that we have not had recently.

What is one of the things we all hate from the Gillis era? NTC's that have handcuffed this teams ability to tear it down a bit quicker.

Let walk: Miller, Skille, Larsen

Draft: Cody Glass

To LV: Sbisa

Re-sign for Canucks: Horvat, Gudbranson, Gaunce

Re-sign for Utica: Boucher, Chaput, Shore, Megna

New to Utica (if possible): Juolevi, Glass, Dahlen, Gaudette, MacEwen, Brisebois, Molino

Baertschi - Horvat - Boeser

D. Sedin - H. Sedin - Granlund

Goldobin - Sutter - Eriksson

Zalewski - Gaunce - Virtanen

Dorsett

Edler - Tanev

Hutton - Gudbranson

UFA - Stecher (Canucks will need to improve their D, if Markstrom is the full time starter. D depth never hurts either, especially on this team)

Biega

Markstrom

Bachman

20+ goal season: Baertschi, Horvat, Boeser

15 goal season: D. Sedin, Granlund, Goldobin, Sutter, Eriksson

* another top 5 pick in 2018
