NHL 1st-round draft pick's career ruined by video game addiction

Could be anyone. These guys are kids and guess what? Kids like video games, a lot.

Question is: Does it interfere with every day life, causing it to be unmanageable? If so, then it's an addiction. If he just plays games a lot, but manages to go to work and do what's required every day, then he's just enjoying a hobby.

I sure hope it's not a Canucks player. My first thought was Jake, but he's been around for 4 years already.

The Canucks have no recent first round picks still in the CHL.   The kid being discussed was in junior hockey this past season.

seems a bit scummy for Marek to make a story out of this... the kid needs help not the huge amount of negative attention he'll no doubt get once people figure it out.

And now any prospect that has ever played a video game once is going to be scrutinized by fanbases if they were a CHL prospect drafted in the first round in the last three years.

More specific than that....he made it clear they were in CHL this year....narrows it down too much.   It was a BS thing to publish.

Video game addition. That's a bunch of bullcrap. Are video games fun?  Sure.  But to be ADDICTED to them?  Come on.

I suppose a person could get "addicted" to anything.  Personally, I'm addicted to sports cars.  Doesn't mean I have to sit in one, look at one or research one at all times.

An addition like this is a lack of self control. Nothing more. The "addition" is a cover-up for a guy simply not being interested enough in his career to put the effort in.

As someone who works in the field, I can tell you that my industry puts a lot of effort in making the games addictive. There are analytics everywhere that track which parts are addictive and we make use of that info. Why do you think all these kids keep watching YouTube videos of other people playing games? In the interest of mindshare (i.e., money), the industry takes advantage of human nature (especially male nature). It's similar to what pornography does. You can definitely doubt it, but a lot of experts know better: http://www.who.int/features/qa/gaming-disorder/en/

meh, a non story.  A kid "addicted" to video games as defined by an "old fart" (heh, like me).

I must have played HUNDREDS of hours on games like Dragon's Age & Skyrim.  I was what you call an addict.  Didn't affect my work at all (I just threw Alf under to the bus if anything went wrong :P).

I actually might be worried if the kid didn't play any video games!

It could be Juolevi he played in the CHL last year, and this info according to Marek is up to a year old now. If it is him hopefully he has sorted out this "addiction" which is probably overblown. A lot of speculation on other hockey forums that it's Juolevi.

could also be Max Jones or Zboril.

I’ll add to that i see some people laughing at the idea of video game addiction, and while it does seem somewhat ridiculous, it’s a very serious problem for many people, especially amongst young men. Video games aren’t designed to be fun the entire time youre playing, but rather they offer difficult challenges and patterns and strategies for you to master, and acheiving success releases large amounts of dopamine in the brain which can be VERY addictive. Without this payoff, games would just be frusterating, confusing, and annoying (like math homework or somethig similar).

This addiction can be as serious and life changing as addictions to gambling, marijuana, pornography, or alcohol. It can lead to other anti-social behavious such as theft or srug use to support or suplement the addiction. And themote often the gamer receives their dopamine high, the more immune they become to its affect, so they have to play more games and acheive more rewards to get the same feeling (this is similar to getting high or watching porn or winning black jack). It can cause the person to become distant with friends and family, ifnore healthy lifestyle habits like eating and excercise, disregard personal hygien, and put off more important priorities like work and school (or hockey).

TL;DR video game compulsion/addiction can be very harmful to an individual and they deserve the same sympathy and treatment as any other addict

some of these things are not like the others
