It's crazy how some fans get pissed about letting a 5th round pick walk. They seem to forget exactly what you're stating. We have a 50 man contracts available. If we sign every fringe guy, we wouldn't have room to sign guys like Karlsson and make a run at Kuzmenko.

Improving means knowing who to sign and who to let go.

the ghost of Frankie Corrado lurks these halls...

Yep, you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run. Cause if you insist on playing every single hand, you will go broke really fast.

Do we know for sure that he hasn't been offered a contract and turned it down?  Or that his Agent has told the Canucks " Don't bother"?

After all, he is a teammate of Lukas Jasek who can't have much nice to say about the Canucks after the way we treated him

Canucks have determined that he has no value in the organization. The fact that his exclusive negotiating rights haven't been traded means that the rest of the NHL doesn't believe that they are worth a 7th round pick or equivalent.

So, with that in mind, why are you worried about us offering him a contract?

He'll have a nice career in Finland as a 2nd or 3rd pairing D.

Utunen is a Left shot, he's 22, and he hasn't really done anything remarkable in the Liiga. I can see why the new Canucks management aren't that interested in giving him an ELC. You have to remember that most picks don't work out and of the 5th round picks taken in 2018, only one player Yegor Sharangovich (New Jersey Devils) has played over 100 games so far, and only three other players from that 5th round draft class have played NHL games -- and those players have all played under 10 NHL games each.

So many throw away late round picks by Benning.

2014-Nikita Tryamkin, Gustav Forsling, Kyle Pettit, Mackenze Stewart

2015-Dmitry Zhukenov, Carl Neill, Lukas Jasek, Tate Olson

2016-Cole Candella, Jakob Stukel, Rodrigo Abols, Brett McKenzie

2017-Kristoffer Gunnarson, Petrus Palmu, Matt Brassard

2018-Toni Utunen, Artem Manukyan, Matthew Thiessen

Imagine if one or two of the list of these stellar picks turned out in the Canucks favor.

So he is no longer a Canucks prospect, nor an alumnus,  so time to remove him and move on.  I had hopes for him - seemed like a good kid (and there was always that heartbreaking goal against Canada....)

2014 - Forsling (5th) is an NHLer

2015 - Gaudette (5th) borderline NHLer

2016 - no late round hits but Lockwood (3rd)

2017 - Rathbone (4th)

2018 - miss

2019 - Silovs (6th) and McDonough (7th)

2020 - Persson (7th) looks promising

Pretty much one late round hit per year on average. If you're hitting on your high picks, getting 1-2 players from each draft year is pretty much league average.
