Came for the Tanev trade talk and was not disappointed.

Really though, that's a tough break for Edmonton. I'm actually hoping they do well enough to just miss the playoffs so this doesn't help. Tired of seeing them compete with us for high picks after all this time they've spent at the bottom.

it does make sense, they still only have 2 RHD. Turn your head and cough up that 1st Chiarelli.

.....if that is your top 6, I am amazed people complain about the Canucks top 6.

I agree.  The difference being Canucks are expected to finish Bottom 5, and Oilers are expected to make the playoffs.  Might make them force Bouchard into a roll before he's ready.  That being said I imagine Sbisa or potentially Emelin get a call.  With Lucic's bad blood with Emelin I expect sbisa as a better option.

The Canucks defense is a sight better than Edmonton's right now. It possesses a stronger veteran presence, more physicality, and greater cumulative experience. Edmonton may still have a slight edge offensively if Klefbom finds his scoring touch. Hopefully some of the younger defensemen in Vancouver do too.

Hopefully for the Oilers roster's sake, Chiarelli doesn't f' this up. It would be a shame to see the Oilers blow another year due to Chia's inability to swing a trade in their favor.

man you may be right

but i have a lot of trouble

wrapping my head around any argument

that says that the canucks d grouping

is better then another nhl team's d group

our d has really sucked the past couple of years

Tanev has been injured for a major portion of it, as has Gudbranson. Give both of those players a full season without any major time missed, and the Canucks d-corps comes out on top over Edmonton's much younger and greener defense.

Tanev adds a defensive specialist that only Larsson can challenge for effectiveness, and Gudbranson adds a physical element that no one on the Edmonton blueline can match.

As well, Edler provides a solid veteran presence that is now gone from the Oilers defense with Sekera's injury.

so it potentially is better then other nhl teams

but has not actually been any better the last while

potential only gives a team hope

unless it is realized ?
my view anyway

also employing a system of play

that exposes all the weaknesses of our d group

likely also does not really help them very much

When the entire defense has been healthy, for the two periods that they were, the defense wasn't half bad. Is it a world beating defense? No. But not as bad as many suggested.

Pairing Edler with Gudbranson gave the Canucks a pairing that was very capable, as evident in the last game Vancouver had against Boston last season.

The likes of Del Zotto, Hutton, Stecher, and Pouliot need to grab the reigns and muster up some offense to help the team, and need to play tighter in their own end.

I think Green is going to have a much better idea as to how to employ the defense this season, with his inaugural one under his belt. I am hopeful that the team will have a bounceback season from the back end. Most of the players will have something to prove, especially the younger defensemen who are seeing Juolevi and Hughes as very present threats to their spots on the team.

Chiarelli's board looks like a draft board of top 5 players but instead of top 5 picks in the 2019 draft he has faces of GMS

Thinking, how can I out tank

Bergevin

Dorion

Benning

Waddel

Chayka

And he will keep moving those faces around all year long until he does knowing he is at the helm of the most successful tanking team in NHL history

Benning better be on the phone trying to send a defenseman their way! i'll gladly take a 3rd off their hands

no chance Edmonton makes the playoffs with one of Benning, Russel, or Bear being a mainstay in their top 4. any other injury happens and suddenly they will wish they still had gryba <_<

all of a sudden im looking at our D-corp and im feeling pretty good about it

At this point, if Benning can get a 2nd for Hutton, we should take it and run.

But I still think Edmonton just plugs the hole with a UFA (Sbisa, Emelin, Oduya, Davidson).

Wow.......BH's value is nowhere near that level. He might even be available off waivers. In fact if the Canucks can get him through waivers, he might then have some modest value.

Chiapet said he'll be watching for waiver opportunities so Hutton would probably get claimed.
