A scientist who predicted a grim 'Hothouse Earth' says the world’s billionaires need to give up their money to save us

You do realize that you can look this stuff up. There are about 158 million acres of land in Alberta. Your numbers don't jive.

That being said, many studies show the population is now expected to peak around 9 billion and then start to fall.

Meant Australia.  Doesnt matter most of it is desert, its not the point.  Point is, the earth is not over populated.  This is a dehumanizing over exaggeration meant to turn people sour.  Its a disgusting lie.

you are the 1% I think the 1% you are referring to is the .01%

I remember watching videos of naive college kids protesting how the top 1-10% of the population gotta give their stuff for the less wealthy.  When explained those same college students are the upper few percentage globally and how will they practice what they preach... suddenly they disappear en mass or give some nonsensical answer about why they themselves shouldn't share, lol.

The billionaires don't need to "give up" anything... the rest of the world just needs to take it. Earth is a democracy. If 95% of people on earth want something, the other 5% won't be able to stop them

Too bad we are all just sheep..

Since Canada is a democracy, can I come over and take your stuff?

We're already past the tipping point, and we will see a mass extinction event, in fact we are in one now.  Those focusing on the political aspects are completely missing the point.

But please god, please let the canucks win the cup before that day

If 95% of the canadian population agrees with you taking my stuff by force, then yes.

There's a difference between democracy and mob rule. In a democracy individual human rights have to be respected.

Slavery and gay marriage are two prime examples of this. A lot of people would say that gay marriage is a "human right" but it was denied by a simple majority for many years (and still is denied in many countries and states). Slavery was LEGAL because the majority of people were in favour of it even though it violated human rights. What on earth makes you think a democracy cannot violate human rights? There's lots of democratic nations around the world that violate basic human rights every day.

wut?

Gay marriage was (is still defined by many) as not a basic human right. Societal attitudes change and we progress as a society. Also, everything is relative. For example, at one point the USA had legal slavery based on race but was still considered a democracy. I would currently not define any nation with slavery as a democracy.

It's just how humans are hardwired.

It's how life in general is hardwired. Humans are just really sophisticated and prolific at it.

As for the OP, I very much doubt all the rich people giving all the 'poor' people all their money solves a damn thing. The vast majority would just continue to spend it on cheap, disposable, polluting, low value garbage products that have been shipped half way around the world and food grown in unsustainable, polluting methods. Slowly returning all that money to a few centralized people and continuing to pollute our own environment.

Consumers and consumerist culture need to change. People need to look holistically at where their food, power and products they use come from/how they're created, shipped, disposed of etc. Single use plastics need to stop NOW, people and governments need to actually invest in clean energy tech etc, etc.

And what exactly do we mean by 'poor' anyway? By simply being born/living in North America, you've basically already won the lottery and everyone posting in this thread qualifies as 'rich' and would need to fork over a portion of their worth to actual poor people in Africa, parts of Asia etc.

This is why the Earth is doomed. Because the people with money and power are loathe to give up even one cent. Millions of people will start dying and the 1% will not care as long as they stay rich.

there are a few doing some good, Bill and Melinda Gates are probably the best e.g., they are setting the standard (https://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/infographic-look-millions-lives-saved-and-improved-gates-foundation-171643/).

this is a great idea too: https://givingpledge.org/About.aspx

its so easy to get dark these days, particularly with the orange idiot taking up most of the oxygen in the media, but good things are going on.
