flat land fish
One other question would be does his game translate to being effective in a bottom 6 role as he likely won’t be a top 6 guy to start in the nhl

I don't find foot speed is often the issue with the younger players coming into the league, they are all fast now days and elite skating is practiced and preached more than ever at younger ages. The issue is more often mental, whether they are ready for the pace of the NHL game...not pace as in foot speed but mental pace in how quickly they need to make decisions and process things. It's a big jump, going from the foot speed in College, to the NHL. It's also a huge jump on the physical and mental preparation needed to survive 82 game schedule as well as playoffs. I think McDonough will do well, but fans need to temper expectations, not everyone comes out of College and immediately succeeds like Boeser and Hughes.

If he exceeds expectations, he may be a decent middle six forward. but I’m also curious about his foot speed. His shot looks NHL ready.

Alflives
We need to either sing this guy this spring or trade his rights. Can’t afford to lose him in 2023 for nothing.

Could always go the Lockwood route; talk to him this offseason and if he wants to go back for his senior year ask him outright if he will sign after and if he agrees then let him go back and if not then you can look at trading his rights. But I don't think that will be an issue, I fully expect him to sign as soon as Northeastern's season is over. 1
dpn1
I like this guy a lot. His speed has improved each year (heard an interview in the summer by the coach at Northeastern but I can't remember who was doing the interview). He has descent size and good hands. Apparently he is a good character guy and is friends with Rathbone and Demko. I think he will be a solid mid-6 left winger.

But I don't think that will be an issue, I fully expect him to sign as soon as Northeastern's season is over. Yeah, I’m thinking the same. McDonough signs with the Canucks, likely this year. And if he decides to go back for his senior year, I still put Vancouver as strong favourites to sign their draft pick, rather than him pursue the free agency option. Ryan Johnson and Chris Higgins, among others, have done a great job maintaining relationships with our college prospects, hitting that fine line between showing interest, but not pushing too hard, making the players feel both respected and supported. How many times have we seen college guys say they’re not thinking about pro, are focused on their teams, and be noncommittal when questioned by reporters about their intentions. And then, once it comes time to put pen to paper, they say there was never any doubt, they felt a sense of loyalty to the team that drafted them, and they specifically mention the great relationships they’ve had with Canucks staff, and how easy the decision was to sign with Vancouver. It’s been nearly every case. We always worry about them holding out, but when the time actually comes, they sign, and are very happy to become Canucks. No reason to think McDonough will play out any differently. So expect to see Dunzo in blue and green, and laughing it up with his buddies Rathbone and Demko, at a future Canucks training camp. Also, I’d expect to see the Canucks in the mix for several of the top NCAA free agents. Would not be surprised to see Vancouver sign a healthy crop of college guys this year. Names like Ethen Frank and Mark McLaughlin (NCAA goalscoring co-leaders, both are RH shots who can play C, and both have really impressed this year) or maybe Taylor Ward (Kelowna born former BCHLer putting up some nice numbers in Omaha, 6’2”, 207lb, RH shot forward). Or, among the Dmen, UDFAs like Akito Hirose, Travis Mitchell, Brandon Scanlin, Drew Bavaro, Zach Metsa, Jake Livingstone (another BC boy), Nick Blankenburg, and others, may soon be names Canucks fans need to learn. Yeah, the defining characteristic of most nhl players is the speed at which they process the game - that’s why a guy that skates like Schenn can still play and be effective - especially when paired with a mobile guy... or woman... there’s a Monte Python riff there somewhere...
