Yep.   Grow up indeed.   It's business - he's been around too long and been part of a couple trades and had the opportunity to take less money for clauses for sure but didn't...suck it up buttercups and move on.

GM MacLellan cited having a tight knit group that weathered battle together as one of the 5 key reasons the Capitals finally won a Cup.  Players talked of how they turned things around when they finally started playing for each other.  One of the very 1st things Guerin did when arriving in Minnesota was to impress on players that they had to become more than just guys playing hockey together if they ever wanted to win a Championship.  It’s harder for a team to overcome adversity if players don’t want to battle for the guy next to them.

Course they then decided not to pay their head coach what Trotz felt he deserved.  Haven't been past the 1st round since.

Great post.  Agree whole heartedly.

Edler is the franchise's best defenseman no doubt. But his time has passed. Huge liability out there.

Agree but hes still a good number 3 or 4 on most teams.  I wouldnt call him a liability either.  Its clearly not helping that hes paired with Chatfield who has no idea what hes doing out there.

And he'll be replaced in the lineup by who?  Triple shift Schmidt?

Edler is far from the team's worst problems.

For sure it is.   When only two of your players leave it all on the ice over 60 minutes a game it's not close to enough ... the team for sure has some of what WSH had - so has had a taste at least...

Edler is probably the lone brightspot on thd defense.  I feel bad for him.  These are his final years of playing and the team hes led for so many years now have players playing like a bunch of little brats.

Just "taking care of business" will never win you a cup. WIthout emotional investment you're not going to be the best you can be. Building a successful team requires time, developing chemistry, going through growing pains together, making friends. Look at the Canucks teams that made the finals. They were all extremely tight-knit groups. Not every single player of course, but there was a core of heart and soul players that genuinely cared for each other.

Three heart-and-soul guys left the team, Tanev, Markström, Stecher. It will take time to get over that, to develop a new identity. Horvat, EP, Boeser, QH etc. will (hopefully) stay together long enough to eventually develop it. Regarding identity the team took a couple of steps back and Miller, an experienced player who has seen a lot, knows it and is disappointed. There is no point in dwelling on it, but it is still true.

I agree that it takes time to develop a new identity, but if these guys are crying over spilled milk, hurry up, move on. It's done and it is what it is. Act like pros and take care of the team's business..

Not only that, but Miller also watched the team that traded him away go on to win the Cup. That's gotta sting too.

Part of what may have drove him last year was to prove Tampa wrong. He definitely proved he was better than most thought, but Tampa still proved that they didn't really need him.

Then he watched a bunch of the leadership core walk out the door. Not only that, but reports came from all of them that they felt burned by Canucks management during negotiations. Guys who laid it all on the line in the bubble, felt their efforts weren't appreciated. (Meanwhile, the team committed to keeping Virtanen.)That might have affected the motivation of others on the team.
