(proposal) Van & NYI..Would U?

Recommended Posts

In light of this PO's action & results, I mulled this deal outa' the blue. Let's tie up some loose ends/details to simplify the question:

- Virtanen situation is resolved(no charges)

- EP40 is signed by JB(Van fans rejoice)

- NYI protect Pulock & Mayfield at July ED, for their RhD certainty, going forward

Proposal:

Van: Quinn Hughes & Virtanen

NYI: Dobson & Beauvilier

Assuming the Isles have enough size in other D, they wouldn't mind a smallish PP-specialist. Also figuring Quinn's value is still much higher than ND's, we benefit with the imbalanced fwd swap.

Not hard-selling this. Just curious, do CDC'ers see this as near in value? Or is the value way off?

Last point is our likely cap-squeeze for this yr(Last F***ing yr of Lou & Lu) is pretty much settled & kosher, if such a deal was struck.

Absolutely not. Quinn is a superstar. We aint trading a superstar and then bitch about it for the next 15 years.

So we will have to pay, what 12-14% of team cap ceiling to him? When things get ratcheted-up in spring, can you win with small blueliners who excel offensively?

I'm not trying to contradict for the sake of it. Do you feel these questions are worthless/pointless? Or is this particular yr(of sizeable D in vogue) just a one-off?

Pietrangelo as an established top pairing D UFA only got 8.8 million (10.8% of the cap) in a flat cap world.

Hughes as an RFA who can't be offersheeted,  with defensive deficiencies, isn't going to get anything close to that

Noah Dobson is an excellent young defenseman who can play in all situations, and is a right handed shot.  He is a comparable value, just plays a different style.  Adding in a solid young player who can provide secondary scoring to the trade helps out our third line both now and in the future.  Guys like Dobson don't grow on trees either and you have to give to get.

So guys like hughes do grow on trees? We cant find secondary scoring unless we trade our franchise dman? Interesting

I would do the deal you propose and I don't think you are too far off in value. The question that no one knows the answer to is: can Hughes really become that dominant force on D? Or will he always be a defensive liability? Someone like Dobson is a much safer bet to be an all situations #1D in the league.

However, I can't see JB trading Hughes. He does project to be a superstar. It just remains to be seen if we can build a roster that wins cups with Hughes as our #1D. I don't know.

Anyway I also don't see the Isle's agreeing to this deal. I don't think Hughes fits their style and game plan. They like their D men to be big and be able to defend.

I believe they will lose Leddy to Seattle, which will help clear some cap space. But then they will need a cheapish LD to fill the gap (Salo not yet ready). They may target someone like Dunn to play on their 2nd pairing and PP1, and resign Greene for league minimum. Shame for them that they traded Toews.

Something like:

Pelech Pulock

Dunn Dobson

Greene Mayfield

(Aho)

They have some major contracts to pay for in Pelech, Beauvillier, Sorokin, Cizikas that need to be factored in. The return of Lee will be a major boost to their chances next season too.

Thanks for reply..pretty solid reasoning that's hard to dispute.

I could see Lou Lamo wriggling outa' some contracts(LTIR?). With the new bldg in a key market, could also imagine the league likes this growing Isles ascent.

Then there's the NJ rivalry.. who may well wind up w/ the other Hughes Bros. Lamo could think back to his 90's teams, with Nieder/Rafalski types complemented by a mostly rugged D-core.

Dobson is a solid 2nd pairing d-man, but he isn't a two-way d-man that can be a leader on the top pairing.

Good luck getting a legit #1D though.  Aren't 30 of them in the entire league & the ones that have them will only deal them by being paid a king's ransom.
