Deja Vu, 3 Decades On?

I'd like to reminisce a bit with this thread, back to a brilliant Fall, 1991; we mid-aged Nucks-backers(likely 99% of us!) must look back upon with a particular fondness. One searches for parallels, but not easily. Could the world itself appear more different from 1991 - 2021? In Pavel Bure's case, consider the clandestine, whack-a-mole games required, for him to finally surface on the west coast. Cloak & dagger like a Le Carre' novel. Heard he even temp-married a Seattle lass to help with these evasive, immigrant manoeuvres.

There was so much mystery surrounding this young talent..multiplied by the fact we'd pilfered him(league even had to rule on this), in what was allegedly, surreptitious, controversial, games played info. When you finally saw this guy on-ice with parachutes, claiming he'd pot 50 & throwin' in his own(newly found) $ to bet on himself..it felt like the Ultimate sportsman cast in a 60's Bond movie!

Can't help smiling, imagining back then all of us having an equivalent CDC/social media of today. We all woulda' swamped the damn system with 100's of pages on the guy's eating habits!

                                             **********************************                                     ***************************************

Well here we are, in messed-up COVID times, once again with a brilliant, fresh-faced, 20 yo Russian winger, intent on joining our squad in the Fall. These past 3 decades have been so much better(peaks & valleys, sure..but exciting!) than the first 2 were - just gotta' simply state! Most likely this young man doesn't yet know that much of this varied history.

Pavel arrived to a starving fanbase, that would watch with almost no team-expectations. Granted, we'd started strong in Oct 1991, yet the franchise had been beaten like a lousy drum for 2 decades prior. The coming speedy ascent of that team(from '91 to '94 zenith) was short, yet so thrilling. All these variables had created that vacuum.

Could well be this young cast of ours is itself, on the rise once again. Even appears to be quite sustainable, this go-round. Where legendary Pat Quinn was sharp in collecting bruising, protective vets, JB is equally adept at plucking(more ELC!) gems from any draft pile.

This squad here is certainly a younger, different beast altogether.

At any rate, I'd like to hear any/all comparisons & reflections. Anyone recall the Fall of '91? Agree this young version has a lot more upside?

That 90s team had a sheriff by the name of Gino Odjick.  And he had ALOT of deputies lol.  Even Bure had a nasty mean streak when provoked.  He didn’t just ‘turn the other cheek’.  He retaliated right away.

There's details over on VIP's player page(for inquirin minds!)

So, while waiting in line at the cash @ Safeway, I read the headline page of The National Enquirer (The magazine of Truth) that quoted the "My Pillow & Sham-Wow" guys who said that Pod's is actually a distant descendant of Godzilla, so looks like we'll have a humm-dinger of a player on the way to save the day!

I wish we’d go back to those sexy 91 jerseys for every game. They’re Petey’s favourite - why don’t we commit to it, as it may help contract negotiations.

We never got closer to a cup then with them ... all the Sedin team guys wanted to wear them.   Maybe it's time.   Make the Orca the third jersey just to keep the new fans happy.   Won't take long for them to fall in love with the Skate.   It just worked.

As for the OP ... i started comparing this team to the early 90's team when QHs was a rookie.   Ronning was the same age as Horvat is to EP basically.   The only thing this team doesn't have compared to that team is the type of solid vets we had back then.   It for sure had a similar young skill though.   Gelinas was also a stud, and we ended up with Hedican too.   Linden and Bure and Nedved for one year too.  Current team actually has a better wealth of young players probably.   But it doesn't have close to the veteran help.

Hopefully the core is going to rise to the occasion though.   The early 90's team had both great young players and good solid vets.   The Butcher trade vs the OEL trade - both are huge...does this mean a run to the final in two-three years? Sure hope so!

Way more depth these days and JB seems to like adding more whereas before it's been sell depth for winning it all now... never did work, not even once.

 No cup sucks!

Early 90's teams had crazy depth too after the Butcher trade....better vets for sure.   What this one has is more potential with young players then ever ... when they are 25-32....wow just hope we can keep it all together

The one thing about those 90s teams was the size. In 94 they were the biggest team in the league. Even the skill players outside of Ronning were not small. Bure was not big but as Shane Churla found out he could play bigger and with the guys playing alongside made them even bigger.

The Canucks in 94 had size, depth and skill as well as speed. Great D and The Captain in net. Its that balance we are missing today. We dont need a bunch of goons who cant skate we need that combination of size with talent. Bertuzzi created space for Naslund. Momesso created space for Ronning. and they could chip in a few goals along the way also. Bure could create his own space. He was so fast no one could keep up with him.

That D core Babych at 6'4. strong as an ox and a bit surly too,Diduck at 6'1 and surly also, Dirk at 6'4,Glynn  6'4, Hedican 6'2 and skate like the wind, Lumme 6'1 and smooth, Murzyn 6'2, Plavsic, and Slegr both 6'1, even Jeff Brown was 6'1.

Go back and look at the size of the team up front also. Ronning Peca Gelinas and Bure were the only players on the 94 team up front that were under 6 feet and Gelinas and Peca were 5'11. Size isnt everything, but size with skill is a big advantage. Love the skill players we have today, and the game is different but St Louis had a pretty big team the year they won. Tampa isnt small either, especially on D.

Yes we have many players over 6 foot now but in comparison to the league in 94 we were much larger.

The ‘94 team was great.  Our D was big, but we didn’t have a high end guy.  We lost to the Rags, who had a superstar on D.  And he was 5’10 and 180 pounds.

It’s why we lost in 2011 too.  No superstar on D.

Now we have Hughes.  He’s a superstar.  We are winning at least one Cup this decade.

I do hope you are right Alf. Again size isnt everything, but skill is. i just like the combination of the two
