Man what a pickle for Montreal.. I’m not sure it’s worth it to them to match.

I know he hasn’t lit the world on fire yet but losing a young, rangy C you took 3OA for a likely low 1st and 3rd is pretty brutal though.

The only way they “win” is if they don’t match and Canes somehow don’t make the playoffs.  Otherwise Bergevin got hosed pretty good here.

Considering they took Galchenyuk at 3OA too, maybe they should avoid centres at that spot?

So I see "Pettersson" is trending on Twitter.

Tons of posts like these all over the place..............

This has no bearing on Vancouver’s ability to match.

The only way a team overpays to the point that we don’t match is if it’s 4 first rounders. If a team wants to pay that then we probably take it.

Habs, if they don’t sign JK, still don’t have the cap room to offer more than six.  They are up against the 10% over already.

Don't think that is correct Alf. They can still use Weber's LTIR during the off season as per CapFriendly below.

Can LTIR be used in the off-season?

Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

At the start of the season the teams LTIR relief & ACSL is recalculated when the 10% cushion is removed.

Montreal can use Weber 7.8 million ----Byron 3.4 million  --- 11.2 million LTIR , Weber will not be back ?? Byron not sure

I think that means a team can go over by 10% including the (presumed) LTI contracts.  So Weber counts up until game one.  Same for us and Ferland.

Aren’t they like 8 mil over the cap right now?

Even with Weber on LTIR they’re tight up against the cap. They better hope Byron is out long term.

They can’t use the LTI contracts in the summer.  That’s why there is a 10% buffer; it’s to accommodate the LTI contracts, that will turn into LTIRelief once the season starts.  The Habs right now have six million to get to the 10% over.  If they keep JK, they are right at that 10% over.  If they let him go, they still only have 6 mil.

They're also paying a 1st and a 3rd to create a cap issue for them; they'll also have to probably give up another 1st+ to get rid of Gardiner.

why? they are only sitting at 1.5mil over the cap if they get KK on the roster and they have 2-3 contracts to send down to the ahl. the following year i doubt they are re-signing KK at 6mil unless he has a breakout season or something

Don't think they would have to provide proof that Weber would be out for the 1st 10 games or 24 days if that were the case.

They'll have to at some point, unless they're willing to pay an AHL pylon $4M for the next 2 years.

Isn’t Weber out for the year?

Yes, in all likelihood but Montreal just needs to provide the NHL proof that he will miss the 1st 10 games or 24 days and then they can exceed the 10% cap overage by the amount of his cap hit. We could do the same for Ferland.
