You can see that he works hard and because of that his skating will even get stronger. It won’t be his brains or grit that keep him out of the NHL. He has really had a great season. Top scoring WHL player to the AHL without a hiccup.

86Viking
I have been very impressed by Bains and the rookie AHL season he has put together. Sure seems like the perfect bottom 6 forward who can PK and works hard every game. Props to this kid for never giving up and it lead to an NHL contract and he is making a living PLAYING hockey! Need more guys like Bains!

He'll be a difference maker.

Popular Post CRAZY_4_NAZZY
At the end of game 3, Jacob Pelletier for the Wranglers gave Martin three jabs to the glove, Bains came over the buried him behind the net with a stiff shove. He just stared down at him waiting for him to come up and tackle him/punch him, get mobbed by other Wranglers. Several other times, The Wranglers goons like McLain, Rooney, and Duehr took runs at Rathbone, Johansson, and Karlsson and Bains jumped in quickly without reserve to defend his teammates. This guy has a fearlessness about him that allows him to swarm around the crucial areas of the ice. Guy has high hockey IQ, just at the right places on the ice at the right times and makes the right play. Plays up and down the lineup when called upon. Has the skills to put up points but really the way he will make it into the NHL is to play that swiss army knife/two way winger who plays in those hard areas. https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-prospects-tristen-nielsen-and-arshdeep-bains-playing-key-roles-in-abbotsfords-playoff-push Quote “The biggest reward as a coach is when you have a bunch of guys trying to make the NHL and they’re getting rewards along the way,” he added of his team’s growth through the season and success in the playoffs. Bains, who counted Pavel Datsyuk as his favourite player growing up and has modelled his efficient game after the legendary Detroit Red Wing, played five years of junior hockey with the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels before signing last summer with his hometown team. He didn’t know what to expect from pro hockey but what he found has been nothing but positive. “We’re not colliding with each other,” he said of the team’s spirit. “There can be teams, groups, where there’s guys who do their own thing, who don’t realize they’re dragging the group down, but there’s none of that here. “There’s no egos. And Jeremy’s done a great job of making sure we know the end goal.” Bains didn’t play much early in the season. He was sometimes a scratch, watching games from above. What he saw was how fast the game is compared with junior, but also that there was still time to make plays. “The game’s quick but you don’t have to rush,” he said. Nielsen was full of praise for his teammate Bains’s efforts this season. “He sees the ice better than 98 per cent of the world. He has tremendous instincts, too,” Nielsen said. The coaches leaned hard on Bains to learn the defensive parts of the game, Nielsen said. “And now look at him, he went from healthy scratch to playing top-line minutes. He’s on the PK and the power play.” Bains played it cool when his teammate’s praise was relayed to him but also spoke proudly about how far his game has come this year. “When you’re going into your first year (as a pro), you don’t know what to expect, or what you’re good at, or what kind of player you’re going to be,” Bains said. Stylistically, I see Chris Higgins versatility and smartness to his game, and the heaviness and intangibles you see in Tanner Pearson. 3

The above quotes are interesting comparisons. The Burrows comparison resonates because both Bains and Burrows were undrafted underdogs who have a great work ethic and are willing to do whatever it takes to help the team even if they don't have the greatest underlying skill set. Bains has turned himself into a good PK guy (as Burrows did), stands up for his teammates (as Burrows did) and works hard every shift (once again like Burrows). Higgins and Pearson were both first round picks and had more natural ability so their stories are a bit different. I doubt if Bains starts the season in Vancouver next year but if he continues to make progress I could see him as a call-up during the season or making the team out of camp the following year.. He could be an iideal bottom-6 guy who kills penalties, can play shutdown, plays a high energy game, adds to team toughness, and can provide secondary scoring. And, who knows, maybe he ends up on a line with Petey and Kuz (as Burrows did with the Sedins), although I admit that is unlikely. 1

It sounds like he has a good enough d-side game to be able to play a 4th line. Combine that with scoring potential and he looks really good. I love this kid, because of how hard he's worked to get to where he is. I hope he keeps progressing. I think we could have a burrows 2.0 here, not just from the undrafted issue, but from the work, desire, compete level etc. When a Sutter says you know how to compete, there's alot of compete there. Keep developing this kid Canucks / Abby, we may have a nice 3/4th line gem. 1
