So Smelly Cowpies lose a 24 year old 100+ point elite power forward/pest and get back two older - soon to be UFAs and that’s winning? The Cowpies will need to sign Huberdough and Ceegar to huge overpay contract’s to keep them, or both do a Little Johnny and walk for nothing.  This was a horrible trade made by a GM wanting to delay his inevitable firing.

Where did I say they won the deal?

You are assuming a huge overpay, but really have no idea.

They traded a 24 YO 100 pt forward for a 29YO 100pt forward, 28 YO Top pair D, and a 1st that could very well be top 15.  That is a very good return for a guy who outright said he would not sign long term, he was 100% going to walk after this year, where JH and MW may very well stay.  They fit just fine with Calgary's window, as most of the team is nearing or in their 30's.

Report: Jonathan Huberdeau unhappy with how trade to Flames played out

The NHL was shaken up late on Friday night when the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers put together what may have been the biggest trade of the salary cap era. The Flames sent forward Matthew Tkachuk and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft to South Florida in exchange for star winger Jonathan Huberdeau, defenceman MacKenzie Weegar, forward prospect Cole Schwindt, and a conditional first-round pick in 2025.

The hockey world was stunned, but one key member of the transaction was left distraught by the news.

According to reporter David Dwork of WPLG Local 10 News, Huberdeau “isn’t particularly happy with how everything played out.”

It is rare that a sniper and playmaker like Huberdeau is dealt in his prime, and reports indicated the 29-year-old was expecting to get a contract extension offer from the Panthers this summer. Dwork points out that despite some early, informal extension talks between Huberdeau’s camp and the Panthers, an offer never came. “The next call was the trade.”

Florida is in win-now mode and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to land a younger player with some grit to his game like Tkachuk.

Huberdeau now must face the pressures of playing in a hockey-mad market in his native country, though he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023. The Flames will have the rest of the summer and the upcoming season to persuade Huberdeau to sign a long-term contract extension.

Also, from a financial standpoint, Huberdeau will see a much more significant portion of his income taxed in Calgary than he would have in Florida, the only NHL

Just saying, the Canucks could've had a trade like this to address their apparent roster issues. People whine about how Benning this or that to the roster, but JR hasn't done all that much to address those very issues. Instead, we made a splash at free agency and we have even less space, plus we are supposedly trying to re-sign Miller. I've got nothing against re-signing Miller, but if that's the case, we are essentially re-doing the same mistakes that were done from the previous regime.

People celebrated way too early at Benning's firing and were blindly cheering on JR's moves, even though nothing of significance was really done. Honestly, I think JR/Allvin is doing fine because the roster isn't nearly as bad as people say it is, but this fanbase is so hypocritical.

The main change so far has been bringing in actual coaches instead of Green and his clown crew.  After the end of last year, I wouldn't mind seeing what this group can do with a few more teaks and a full camp to undo the rest of the damage Green did.

They got 2 quality players, a first, and got rid of a locker room cancer.  They needed to change the culture of their team and replaced two gutless cowards with respectable players.  All they need to do now is find a way to get rid of Lucic and they'll have fixed their character issues completely.

They needed a culture change yet the team did everything they could to keep them?

That doesn’t really add up. By all accounts those two were well like by their teammates and were never considered cancers. Nice story though.

For real... Still sobbing over Benning.

He got 8 years and you're not willing to give the new management one year even.

Because they had way too many gutless cowards on their team.  When your entire first line is incapable of playing like men and plays scared when it matters most, they need to make changes.  Management may not have realized that these scumbags needed to go but this was absolutely necessary if Calgary ever wants to be a respectable team.

I mean I’m not gonna argue that they didn’t play a weak game in the playoffs, I’m not so sure Huberdeau is their answer there though.
