Which goalie prospects should/can the Canucks target?

Buffalo Sabres: Ukko-Pekka Luykkonin

23 year old 6’4 goalie, drafted #54 in 2017. Possesses a lot of traits that Ian Clark looks for in a. Goalie and old enough that he could prob play back up next year. Buffalo already has Levi coming up in the system.

The difference was COVID sh*t all over the cap and halted a 4-8mil cap increase that was announced right after acquiring Toffoli, we HAD to let guys walk. Edler also chose to walk because he wanted a change of scenery. Im glad we let Markstrom walk because hes been absolutely trash this year and hes locked in 6x6 and getting worse. Tanev I do wish we were able to keep, but we went with Schmidt who had better numbers.

Holtby+Schmidt+Pearson helped us shed 1.5-1.8mil cap space over Markstrom+Toffoli+Tanev in a cap frozen climate where there was no certainty and no other GMs were all that willing to take a risk. Tanev is also extremely injury prone. Last year in the playoffs we wasnt far off from needing to play in a wheelchair, this year hes missed 10 games already.

JR and PA CREATED their own crisis by signing Mikheyev, extending JT before Horvat and leaving no room to get a deal with Horvat done.

Yep, if we really wanted we could have used Miller's 3M pay rise and Mikheyev's 5M (8M all up) to pay for Bo's extension (likely 3M), Miller's at the end of this year (probably 2M seeing that he's a 70pt player now) and the remaining 3M on a 3rd line center or a cheap defender.

A lot of rumours pointing towards him being the guy who wants out.

Management spoke of him in high regard before and have yet to put a stamp on said rumours.

It would make a lot of sense if he was the rumoured guy.

2023 draft also kind of strong arms them into wanting to move him sooner than later if that’s the case.

I think the current circumstances have prevented any shot of a pipe dream return. You’d literally need bubble demko for that and it hasn’t been the case. He can get a good return just not great.

Rumours in Vancouver = media driven garbage.

Media here are garbage and already done enough damage.

Vancouver very likely has received inquiries from teams looking to solidify goal. He holds decent value right now with his age, cap regardless of the injuries. And yes teams will call as they will try to buy low on him. You can get a roster piece or prospect/pick for him. Just don't aim so high in terms of Clarke etc

Then we could ice the same lineup for years to come and somehow miraculously expect this team to produce better than we currently are?

Honestly Bo leaving is a good thing for the future of this team. It's ok to part ways when things go stale. Which they absolutely are.

I would be happy with Grans. Maybe we can squeeze out a 1st, but like you said unlikely. 6.04 and 205, top 4 upside?

Grans and a 1st would be fantastic imo, but yeah, I don't see it. Any way you spin it Demko's still a goaltender coming off a tough season, shit team or not. He's also coming off of injury if he's traded sooner than later. It's not like we'd be selling last season's Demko in the summer after said season.

Sure, like most others I'm of the opinion that he's almost certainly better than he's looked this season. But yeah, that doesn't mitigate the fact that he's looked how he's looked and that'll like affect his trade value. Why wouldn't teams use whatever leverage they could in a trade?

If he doesn't want out we can just hold on to him, cool. If he does he'll almost certainly go, organizations don't typically hold on to players who don't want to be around very long. Fans have gotten tired of this circus, some to the point of giving up on the Canucks entirely, why wouldn't some of the players?

As for Grans, sure, why not? Good physical tools. Even if he turns out to be a 3-4 that'd be great. May not be an offensive driver but you need all sorts of D on your back end. https://dobberprospects.com/player/helge-grans/

A life of its own.  Somebody probably said, "Hey, with all this change, do you think Demko might want a fresh start?"  which then translated to "Demko looking for a trade out of Vancouver."

Noletta Zeegolzin? Heard he's pretty good.

Istoppa DePuuk is right up there with him in the rankings for best goalies currently playing outside of the NHL

I call BS lol. Such a gullible fan base.

Yea cuz everything has been soooo smooth this season lmao. Another disastrous start to the year, except no bounce back. The Rachel Doerrie crap, Boudreau debacle, Miller extension, the low ball offer to Horvat and had to move our captain…. Talking about major surgery i.e. this is more than just a simple retool, which means more years wasted not winning and wasting Demko’s prime. The jerseys being tossed on the ice constantly, the “welcome to Van” jersey toss for our brand new head coach. This fan base is classless and I wouldnt want to be in this market even if it was the only team on the planet.

Just like they blamed the "speculation" for causing the Boudreau firing?  Maybe they are surprised it is out in public, not because it isn't true.

This isn't likely a move in season anyways.  Teams would probably want to see him back healthy and playing again for a while.   A lot more suitors in the offseason too.

Joel Blomqvist

A young, developing goalie with good size and technical skills, very good hockey sense, and a great track record of stopping pucks at the junior level. Upside to become a starting goalie at the NHL level.

The Finnish goaltender enjoyed a terrific campaign with Kärpät in Liiga, leading the league with a 1.32 goals-against average and a 0.940 save percentage – albeit in just 20 appearances. Development has been going as expected for Blomqvist, to the point that the Penguins felt comfortable dealing Calle Clang at the trade deadline. He plays a very technical game, focused on tracking the puck and cutting down angles to remain big as he is relatively undersized at 6-2, 183 pounds. He is not an explosive skater like Yaroslav Askarov, but he is very precise in his lateral movement, rarely finding himself out of position. It looks like he will likely start the year in Wilkes-Barre after signing an amateur tryout in the spring. Don’t be surprised if he takes over the net by the end of the year.

which bad season?

no team is going to be dissuaded by 15 games over the span of the first month and a half of a season playing for a tire fire of an organization, especially when the rest of his track record up to this point, since he was a teenager, was exclusively "elite goalie".

After two injuries, a surgery and a bad season they will be. Good you mentioned his 15 games, 3 of which are wins… and he was being outplayed by a back up G at the time. Been out for a while now too.

They’re definitely not gonna look at him in the same light as last year.

His track record since the bubble was an elite G up until this point. Prior to that he was a developing G.

It’s night and day circumstances.

Don't forget the media are a bunch of trolls just waiting to expose some minor issue and blow it up, knowing that the local fans will grab their pitchforks and the toronto media can pile it on during HNIC. Just be the first troll to tweet it and then maybe Fridge will retweet it, and now there's a whole debacle going based on nothing.

Even if he is rumoured to want out, he's still under contract. Allvin and co shouldn't move him simply because he's rumored to want out. Wait until next season, and if he performs better, than our return could be better. It's a gamble because what if he doesn't perform to bubble Demko ever again? Then his value is on the decline. At that point, you get what you can for the guy.

Yes this situation is a bit more of a pickle to deal with since there are more unknown variables going on.
