I'd put Bo = Hronek atm, (depending on Hronek working out/ signing an extension), which give us Beau and Raty as the cream...

 

If Beau (or Boeser/Garland) can be used in a deal to get another top 4 defensive D, I'd call this a massive win.

Alf compared it to the Linden trade, and it could be compared to it, if we get another D. Filling in the gaps without losing significantly offensive output, is a massive win.

 

If Raty turns out to be at least a serviceable 3C, then its a home run.

My only response would be he could've shown a bit more personality here. And no....you can't blame others for lack of success if you are a true leader, you own it. You strive to do more. I thought Bo was great but also really questioned why he didn't use his size more to turn up the heat and play a more physical game at times. To lead his soldiers into battle rather than skirting around it. Excuses don't cut it for me. Which is (one of the reasons) I'm so hyped on JT...he does play that type of game and it makes a difference. Helps to shed the "easy to play against" label...and that is changing lately.

I do accept some of our success/failure does lie in the GM's/management's hands. But it was an attempt to gain favour with his new fans/team and he seems to hold that team of "nearly a decade" in low regard.

 

Cracking jokes at the old team is a bit premature anyhow...his new team hasn't done squat yet. He's got some swagger and seems a little smug but he needs to pace himself. Hell, this team pushed for playoffs last year by digging out of a hole that was monumental. I wouldn't start celebrating quite yet...that's a mindset that can get you into trouble.

i'm not here to argue whether he's worth 8.5mil or not i honestly don't care what he's making with the islanders.. the arguement is whether the comparable and offer was a lowball.. yes it was. let's not even look at comparables.. just compare it within the teams salary cap structure.. i don't see in what world horvat is barely worth more than garland and mik and well below boeser. sure it can be all part of the negotiation tactic.. but hard to not start the negotiation on a sour note when you are offering a contract with a paycut while overpaying boeser and paying others almost as much as him for a career best 32 points.

 

let's pretend the salary cap is the minimum wage.. if the minimum wage went up (salary cap went up) if i'm working a contract job and doing the exact same job up to the standard if not exceed throughout the duration and you offer me a contract with a paycut? me personally the negotiation is over i'll just take my talent elsewhere that values them... if i was under performing throughout my previous contract? then ya i can understand the offer.. 

You keep bringing up Boeser’s contract which has nothing to do with Horvat. That was a contract originally negotiated by Benning whereby Boeser’s QO at the end of last season was $7.5 million. They didn’t want to pay him that amount. So they negotiated a 3 year deal to lower his AAV to $6.65 million so they wouldn’t lose him for nothing. That deal has zero relation to Horvat’s contract. 
 

In terms of Mikheyev, he was only given a 4 year deal. His AAV was $4.75 million, but his total money was only $19 million. That’s not a huge investment for a two way winger who can put up 20 goals. 
 

In comparison, Horvat was offered $41 million in total money coming off a 52 point season. Miller was offered $56 million coming off a 99 point season. Any GM with a functioning brain would have given Miller more money than Horvat. A lot more.  Is Miller not worth 28% more than Horvat when his point total is almost 100% greater?  
 

The $5.125 million and $41 million total money was the starting point in negotiations. They would have went higher I’m sure. Problem is Horvat didn’t even want to counter. He simply wanted to ride out his deal, take advantage of Boudreau’s no defensive responsibilities system, get as many goals and points as possible playing with Miller who was feeding him all those passes, and then get some sucker like senile old man Lamoriello to give him his overpaid retirement contract.  Good for him. Now he’s throwing shade at Canucks fans even though he has $68 million in his pocket.
