It always feels like we are the team who has players nobody wants or teams want to give us the worst return back.

We (fans) overvalue our players; for example, we paid $56 million for Miller, who now doesn't fit our goals but is still a great player, so we trade him but encourage you to overpay for him because we'll keep him if no one pays too much. Garland and Boeser are treated the same way—if we don't receive our price, we keep them! Guess what, the rest of the league doesn't give a damn; keep them all.

This time really is different though, we have 2 franchise players and a potential top 10 goaltender hitting their primes, and its not fair to judge this management team against the mistake of the past regime.

This management team has not traded our first round pick, like Benning did.

Instead, with some maneuvering, they exchanged an expiring UFA Bo for a top-four RHD, and has been excellent at acquiring cheap or free quality assets (Filip Johansson, Kravtsov, Bear, Kuzmenko, Mikheyev).

This is the best performed retool on the fly Ive seen so far. They got a good prospect for.. Riley Stillman? They got a pick for Lazar who they picked up for free as a UFA. They are managing assets extremely well.

Was the 1st + 2nd an overpayment for Hronek? Maybe, it remains to be seen. But we cant judge that until we see him play.

A team that sits at 27th in the league should have no thoughts of retooling on the fly because IT DOESN'T WORK. I think it's been proven enough. Sometimes you just have to wave the white flag. One major problem stands in the way of that. Aquilini's ego. It's way too big for this city. Yes we have three main players but really all we have done is guaranteed we are going to be mediocre yet again. We aren't close to being a contender. Contenders have way more than three players. Aquilini is toxic.

Where are all those people after the Hronek deal who said lets just see what they do after this trade?

I feel so much closer to a playoff position right now.

Did you actually think a full rebuild was happening by trade deadline. LMAO

This guy probably plays NHL 23 where you can rebuild your whole roster in 1 year. Sign matthews, pastrnak and Dobson in free agency.

They have to get rid of wingers and cap and they have done neither. There is a reason everyone is laughing at us right now. Garland has been doing great lately. Get rid of him. Find a way not excuses.

I forgot we can't do that after this season is over

The reality is more nuanced than "oh look we finished 27th"

1. We didn't have an NHL goaltender for most of this year. We got 0 help from our string of backups.

2. We had no problem scoring buckets, but we had no defense-first defenders who could help our goalie, nor did we have any help with controlled zone exits from anyone outside of Hughes

3. We did not have the personnel to run an effective penalty kill unit

The reality is these problems are not that hard to solve, IF you can move out money or use buyouts to create room.

The Bo trade was smart - we lost a marginal amount of scoring (and he was not good on the PK) and acquired a top-4 RHD, which was something we sorely lacked. It also gave us another threat on the powerplay.

So here's what we're missing now:

1. Moving some money (Garland or Boeser, and OEL and Myers). One of Garland or Boeser will be moved, I'm fairly confident. Either Garland is bought out, or one of the two is traded with maybe a bit of retention. OEL is bought out. Myers gets traded once his real salary is down, and he becomes attractive to a bad team that needs to hit the cap floor but doesnt want to pay actual salary.

2. 2x defensive defensemen. One LHD one RHD. The LHD should be a cakewalk, theyre everywhere in abundance. The RD is harder, but definitely easier if theyre a defensive specialist, rather than someone like Hronek whos a rare commodity.

3. A penalty killing center. We may even hvae one in the system, but they are not hard to find. Jost or Poehling would do the job.

Make those changes and we're a dangerous playoff team, given just how good we are offensively, and how good our goaltender can be.

Again, we arent as far away as Thomas Drance (who does not have hair, not relevant, just thought id mention it) claims.
