[Report] Stafford "would welcome trade", Regher and Leopold expected to be traded

Recommended Posts

As the season continues, it's becoming more and more likely that the Buffalo Sabres will look to deal some of their players prior to the April 3 trade deadline.

The Sabres currently sit 14th in the Eastern Conference and seven points back of the eighth and final playoff spot.

With a tough hill to climb, it's only a matter of time before Sabres GM Darcy Regier sells off some of his pieces, including defenseman Robyn Regehr and Jordan Leopold, who has missed the last nine games with an upper body injury.

One player who would welcome a change of scenery is winger Drew Stafford, multiple sources have told TFP.

Stafford, 27, has struggled in the first half of the season, registering only two goals and seven assists for nine points in 26 games.

According to one source, "He would welcome a move. . . . would do him some good."

The native of Milwaukee, WI, has two-years left on his contract beyond this season at $4 million per season.

Several teams, including the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars, are in the market for a second line winger.

Meanwhile, Regehr and Leopold are expected to be moved prior to the deadline, providing the Sabres fail to pick up any ground on a playoff spot.

The Kings and Red Wings are also looking for help on the back end, as are St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers.

Stafford doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for us. We certainly aren't looking to move an older winger and a bad signing like we did with Booth, so who would we trade for him? Perhaps a straight swap with Booth, but then we'd have another $4M on the books to deal with next year without really addressing much of a need (he's not really a playmaker and we need someone who can play center).

I wouldn't mind swapping Ballard and a pick/prospect/combo of both for Regehr. Ballard's contract would be off the books, and we'd have ourselves a true shut down D who's contract is up after this year. Even if we don't keep him around, Ballard is off the books. Throw a mid range prospect and a couple low round picks and I could see Buffalo taking a look at it.

We've missed what Ehrhoff brought to our D, but we miss what Mitchell brought us too. He really helped Roberto out.

Leopold sucks, Regher isn't great, I am somewhat interested in Stafford as he brings more hard nosed play that could help int he playoffs, but the contract at the cap hit with the years remaining (With the cap coming down and our situation) is a major turn off.

I don't really see anything Buffalo has available that could help us.

Regehr has lost a step and is overpaid. He's more suited for this division, yes, but he is sloowwww now.

Stafford is a good player who can't seem to find any consistency, like most wingers like him. A move to acquire him and his cap hit would be a lateral one, at best. We have too many wingers at it is.
