Claude Feig
That's some speculation. I wouldn't put too much thought into this considering that you don't know what will happen this off-season. matthias is going to be looking for a payday. sven is guaranteed a spot and is cheap. we are slowly getting weaker and smaller and softer. vey, sven etc
Claude Feig
Just because we haven't re-signed Matthias yet as it's only March, doesn't mean we'll let him walk. like i said, he'll be looking for a good contract that we likely won't be able to pay. and we have a logjam at wing with sven guaranteed a spot. matthias will be out east in july. we will be softer. Sedin - Sedin - Kassian Virtanen - Bonino - Vrbata Baertschi - Horvat - Burrows Kenins/Dorsett - Matthias - Hansen There will be a spot for him... Hank Moody
He's going to be gifted a spot next year. pretty ridiculous seeing as we'll let matthias walk, and let a smaller player join the roster. thought we were trying to compete with la and ana? Lmao you're freakinf out about things that haven't even happened yet?
Senpai
Matthias will be re-signed if he wants to stay here. If Sven's taking anyone's spot, its Higgy. Sven is much more of a Higgins-type player than a Matthias.

You prob don't watch Mathias closely, yet another big guy that doesn't use his size Turns away and does the skate by more then any other player This is a career year for Mathias, and not a great one, could easily have double the goals if he had finish All his goals come off the rush, mostly bad shots that find a way
TimberWolf
Okay, I need this settled. Is Sven next season (after pre season end) like Vey was the beginning of this season as in we cannot start the season with Sven in the AHL without clearing waivers or is it that we cannot bring him up and then demote him without waivers? If you know for sure, please link me where I can read. I can't find anything definitive.(May have been answered in this thread but way too many pages to skim through at work here)
Chalky
OK CDC brain trust, I need some info. Can Sven remain in the AHL next season under his current contract? As I understand it, he doesn't have to clear waivers unless he is brought up to the Canuck's roster. Once he is up, he has to clear waivers. Timberwolf and I have a bet and I really don't want to lose. EDIT: I didn't see he already asked immediately above this...

Every player under contract has to be assigned to a league (nhl, ahl, chl, shl, khl) and if eligible would have to clear waivers, you can't avoid waivers by sending them down right away Like many people proclaimed on here. Sven is much more of a Higgins-type player than a Matthias. I hope so, nothing against Higgins but the team needs some pure second line scoring and JB will be needing to move one or two contracts this off season. Actually, I expect several moves where JB will be able to really put his finger prints on this team.

Actually, I expect several moves where JB will be able to really put his finger prints on this team. The only problem with replacing Higgy with Sven is that Sven doesn't really add anything to the defensive side of the game, where Higgy is a great two-way guy. I'll be honest, i haven't seen much of Sven, don't watch any Utica games, but i doubt he's as good defensively as Higgy is. I mean, Higgy is one of the best PKers in the NHL, i don't think Sven is that. If we can find someone to replace Higgy's effectiveness on the PK then the move makes sense, but with how crappy our PP is, we need a top 5 PK to cancel it out. I get that. So given Sven is currently assigned in the AHL, does he have to clear waivers to stay in the AHL after signing his next contract? He is an RFA at seasons end. Remembering the old Markstrom debate I thought there was a loop hole where if the player was sent to the AHL a certain amount of days prior to the season he didn't have to pass through waivers 30 days or something, so if Sven didn't play any preseason games and was immediately put on the comets roster it might pass through I dunno though because he's definitely worth giving a look come preseason Already an nhl calibre player in my opinion Would help our team now if they weren't so stubborn with this veteran team 2nd line needs help

Sven being a forward would get snatched up pretty quickly.
Ossi Vaananen
He's waiver eligible. He has 66 games at the nhl level approaching his 2nd contract (threshold is 60). Regardless, he's an NHL player, and should play in the NHL. He has a clear step on everyone in the AHL, and is easily Utica's best forward since the trade. He brings a sort of dynamic offensive game that our prospect pool had been lacking at the pro level. My lineup: Sedin Sedin Kassian Baertschi Matthias Vrbata Bonino Horvat Burrows Higgins Vey Dorsett/Hansen

You are unable to place a player on waivers until 12 days before the NHL season starts. Therefore for all players requiring waivers you cannot remove them from the NHL roster until that time. Once that has occured (which is during camp) you must place the player on waivers to be sent to AHL (if they are waiver eligible). That ensures that every player that is waiver eligible must clear waivers at the start of every season to go to AHL. That's why Benning had to expose markstrom.
