fanfor42
Boesers deal will get done and all the silly comments about what should happen will be moot. Fans of the canucks will be fans and the sun will come up. Talk to you guys when the season starts and we can all be on the same page and pulling together for the team to do well. -Vintage Canuck-
Jim Benning on Brock Boeser: "We're continuing to talk to Boeser's agent. We're optimistic we can get him signed by next week."
Popular Post mll
Boeser has no arbitration rights and cannot sign an offer sheet. He's a 10.2 (c) RFA player - CapFriendly also labels his status that way. Those players also don't have the 1 December cut-off date and can sign at any time, unlike other RFAs where past that date they can't play in the NHL for the rest of the season. Agent Lewis Gross, who represents Krug, Gaudreau who too were 10.2(c) players during their negotiations, believes that their situation is more complex because they have no leverage other than to sit out - which Krug and Gaudreau did missing most of training camp. Talking to Thomas Drance - behind the Athletics paywall: “There’s no arbitration and no Group 2 offer sheets,” summarized player agent Lewis Gross of Sports Professional Management Inc. of the status of 10.2(c) players. “So actually the player has no rights, other than to accept the qualifying offer.” [...] “Negotiations are based on leverage, and with a 10.2(c) player, you really have no leverage,” Gross said. “You either take the offer or sit at home. “So the most important thing with a 10.2(c) player is education. There’s a lot that has to go into this. They have to realize that if Player X is making $8 million, but he wasn’t a 10.2(c) player … you’re not really comparable — because you’re a 10.2(c) guy and don’t have the same rights. It’s a completely different situation. “Comparables sometimes play a part in a negotiation, but in the case of these players, they really don’t — unless you’re comparing yourself to a 10.2(c) player.” 2

I.Am.Ironman
I think a bridge deal is best for both sides at this point. 3x7. Boeser gets a big pay day and the Canucks get another chance to sign him long term after QH and EP are resigned. Boeser also has to keep improving to get a further increase next time around. If he gets one of these back loaded deals he gets the big raise if we want to keep him, or if we can't afford it he walks. Apparently Marner is looking at a 3 year deal that would require a 12-13 mil QO at the end of it. Watch Dubas do that, I bet he does.

If all the remaining RFAs do that then that'll be the norm going forward for the next batch of RFA bridge deals.

If BB has a back loaded deal like Meier where the QO is $10M, do you still make the QO if BB is 70-80pt player? If not, then he becomes a UFA. And Nucks get nothing in return. It makes these guys harder to trade too since any other team will just get them likely for 1 year rental and/or have to pick up the big QO. Interestingly enough Hughes will also be a 10.2(c) RFA in 2 seasons, so you have to think about the effect of Brocks deal on that one. You'd think some of these guys would want mostly bonus money for the potential lock out year. The back loaded deals so far are mostly salary which they would lose, but that bonus money gets paid no matter what I believe. Or term... I suspect the team wants nothing to do with a 4 or 5 year term, and the agent really wants a 4 or 5 year term to give his side as much leverage as possible in the next negotiations. The actual salary expectations would change a lot depending on the term.

MeanSeanBean
The thing I have a hard time wrapping my head around, is that Boeser is not more valuable to this team then Horvat is. Why should he be holding out for a significant increase in what Bo gets?

Given the raise in contracts since then, I think 6-6.5 is the best Brock can hope for given 3 years.
