Holey s#** we dodged a bullet avoiding EK. Couldn't believe how many people wanted us to sign that one legged

I don't think there was ever interest from EK to play in Canada again.

I think the chances of him signing with the Canucks for 11 mill were some where between zero and 0.

We dodged a bullet just like all other 31 teams in the league. There was never any negotiations or interest with him signing with Canucks

Hahaha good thing. I just remember all the chatter to try and him a target for us.

Five years, basically. He won player of the year in 2013, came back five years later, won the tour championship, last year the master's, and already his first tourney of the year. 82 tour wins with 15 majors is insane in his era. No one has ever impacted their sport and been as dominant as The Goat.

I'm really not that far off of your argument. If anyone can challenge Gretz for me, it's Tiger.

I do think it's tough to compare an athlete competing in a team sport to one competing in an individual sport.

I think November will show us where we really are.

2 games against Nashville who have been very strong.

Re-match against the Caps

Re-match against the Blues

Re-match against the Oilers

Dallas has been playing much better

Penguins are always good

it's going to be a much harder month

What you say is true, but what you don't say is that the Canucks have been playing mostly on the road - we have only played 5 home games and 9 away and that does continue in November where we play 5 at home and ten on the road. We do have one three in four stretch where we catch New Jersey, but they are also at the end of a three in four.  So, I agree that November will be telling, but our schedule has been heavily tilted toward away games and travel - which may be as much of a problem on the games already played as who we played - but in November they conspire together - and if that's not tough enough - look at the March schedule!  It features 2 three in fours plus a four in six - mostly against tough teams. Predict lots of heavy legs and injuries in March so we better have access to some kids that have developed in Utica and have graduated from College, plus Tryamkin! I do believe we will need the extra bodies.

Honestly, hadn't really looked at our upcoming schedule, or our schedule at all for that matter

This month is going to be a true test of this team

..... And it doesn't get any easier after that, especially when travel is considered

For me, that's why he takes it over The Great One, because TG1 had a star-studded supporting cast whereas The Goat has only himself against the rest. A great discussion, tho (maybe not for this thread, ha!, but great nonetheless).

I got roasted for saying signing him for more than 9mil long term would have been a bad deal. Mentioned his bum ankle being a big problem. I am not above saying I told you so.  People don't hesitate to throw stuff I say in my face.

Yep there's a ice cream truck mentality on these boards sometimes. His signing made no sense.

At this point it looks like signing anyone over 28 long term is probably a bad move regardless of that players skill/pedigree. The game is so much faster then even a year ago and will only continue increasing in speed as veterans get replaced by younger faster players. Eriksson is as fit as can be and has worked hard the entire offseason to improve his skating and he still has trouble sometimes keeping up. At a certain age muscles can’t respond fast enough to improve a players game in order to compete with young guys still developing.

The age used to be about 30, but it’s creeping downward due to the pace pickup of the game and effecting even the all stars now.

I for one, wanted EK to sign, but not for the contract he got.  Who knows though, on the Canucks, his stats would most definitely would be different than what he's had on the sharks.  SJ is really missing something.  I guess Joe Pavelski really was the guy who made everybody better on the team.  I really didn't think SJ would sign EK and not sign JP.

Over the last 10+ years or so, it’s also been proven that teams that have players, or a core of players that take up too high a percentage of the cap, will not have the necessary depth to win a championship.

Cost controlled elite talent + depth = championship.

If you look at teams like Chicago, Pittsburgh, LA, Boston, and St. Louis, this is how they won their cups.   Even a team like Washington followed this formula (though they were on the higher end of this).

Given what they traded to get EK it kinda makes sense to keep him, but I figured they'd try move cap out to keep Little Joe. Dude was the engine that made the team go. Also figured they'd try get Karlsson around Hedman dollars. It's California, I am sure you can live on 8ish mil per. But hey, it was his prerogative to make bank. He wanted Doughty money and because of it he made his team a rebuilding team. We don't need or want guys like that.

If your point is that Colorado benefiting the way they did doesn't mean Sakic is a genius I agree. It's easy to praise a move in retrospect, but you're right, nobody saw it coming. Most didn't see Ottawa sliding the way they did, just like most didn't see San Jose sliding the way they have. That's why I'd say no, the Karlsson trade wouldn't make Dorion look like a genius if San Jose wound up giving em a top pick.

Neither GM had any way of knowing how things would turn out, they were likely just making moves that each thought would benefit their teams/organizations at the time. Karlsson wanted out, Ottawa needed to get something. There'd been rumblings about Duchene for years, something had to happen eventually.

If Ottawa gets a top pick it's an interesting story line, but that's all it is.

Well I agree that it doesn't make him a genius. My point all along was that people have praised Sakic, not solely but largely because of the trade that landed them Byram. We heard it all offseason from many about how Colorado are the darlings of the league in how to run a team. Sakic has done a decent job, but they get way too much credit here especially when many of those same people talk down of Benning during his rebuild.

I wanted EK big time; thought it would fill the hole at #1RD.

I have also wanted about a hundred things JB did not do and am very happy he is GM instead of a rabid fan such as I.

This team is so good and so entertaining now and we have a very nice crop of yutes chafing at the bit to make the team.

So many good moves that I did not understand at the time like cementing the 4th line, filling the roster with middle sixers and letting them battle it out, etc., etc.

Restocking Utica such that they are now a contender for the AHL Calder Trophy all the while developing prospects and a winning attitude playing the same 'right way' as the big club.

Phenomenal.  GM of the year candidate (even though the good work has been going on for a few years now).

I'd rather develop our PP1 man Hughes instead. Maybe add OJ or RathB as our PP specialist options.

I was very glad we didn't break the bank here and sign Karlsson, if he had wanted to come here.  To that kind of extended contract.  He was and is still on nights, a smart, efficient, elite D.  But he's 29, and is just starting an eight year contract.  And he already shows signs of decline.  I can see an eight year contract for someone like a Petey or Brock, at their ages, but IMO its a mistake to sign any older player for such a long term.  One or two years extra is fine, with the idea of being bought out, but what happens if EK turns into an LE after 3 or 4 years?  They'd only be half ways through the 8 years.  Yikes.  Look at the mess in Chicago with Seabrook.

We can only cross our fingers.

Just want to give a shout out to Benning and Edler. These guys have taken a beating in the media the last several years and they are both looking good right now. Benning has learned a lot in the last 5 years and might be GM of the year if the buys keep this up. Im even seeing positivity on the HF boards. Hell is indeed freezing over.

Edler has had his ups and downs, but ive always been one of his biggest supporters. The guy had to adjust after serious back surgery. Now that he has help hes playing like a number 1 Dman.  I like this team more then 2011, they have the prospects to insulate the team. In 2011 we had the big names but no prospects to keep up the energy on the team.
