canucklehead44
when you compare mallet's season with other 19 year olds in the CHL he is very comparable to a late first early second round pick in the 2010 draft. (the year the canucks didnt have a pick traded to florida). All gillis has done here is pickup a player on a faster trajectory for the pro game to replace the loss of that draft pick who has progressed at a reasonable rate in comparison to those players from his draft year. ant compare apples & oranges people look at the real numbers and you start to see the reasoning behind this pick. Based on last years performance using equivalency rankings Mallet ranked 51st in offense among forwards who were either draft eligible or drafted during the 2010 draft. To put this into perspective, let's say we drafted Mallet 57th in 2010. Based on this position, 17 forwards drafted after 57th performed better and 25 forwards drafted before 57th performed better. By the 57th pick there was 39 forwards selected. So based on this, Mallet would have been an acceptable pick at 35th overall and at 62 overall he would been the best forward available if the draft was done in hindsight NOT including draft eligible players who were piked in following years. Factor in his truculence and in the end Mallet is looking like a pretty good pick. http://nhlnumbers.com/2012/8/1/forwards-and-nhle-2010-draft
Millerdraft
Ah. Well, I guess he was almost an overager, but not really Still, I thought this was an off-the-board pick. This guy wasn't ranked or had any mid-term ranking. What I would really want to know is if Gillis tried to play with the 2nd round pick to get multiple lower round picks... maybe he didn't. Sharpshooter posted this on page three: Gillis says, "Well we knew he wouldn't" in terms of Mallet dropping to a later round to pick up (meaning they had info someone else was going to draft him soon after their pick) and @ 2:09 Gillis talks about the very thing you want to know. Grape
Big,skilled centre for big skilled centre?.........makes no sense. Don't believe the source at all. He also said that Schroeder will more likely be involved, not Gaunce.
komodo1970
Sounds a little like Shane Doan in his hay day. It would be sweet if he developed into that type of player.
klw604
Definitely won't be the next Burrows. Burrows was a fluke as it is. How would you know.... He hasn't even played a game in the ahl and NHL
Russ
If Mallet becomes a solid 3rd liner in a couple years I would put that in the success category.
avelanch
He also said that Schroeder will more likely be involved, not Gaunce. I'd be fine with that as well. Bjugstad is a huge upgrade on schroeder.
Pears
I'd be fine with that as well. Bjugstad is a huge upgrade on schroeder. If we can get Bjugstad while keeping Schroeder I'd be happy.
UFCanuck
How would you know.... He hasn't even played a game in the ahl and NHL He thinks he does, thats the scary part. Last summer 80% of CDC was calling Hodgson a bust. Fast forward to February and 80% of CDC was pissed at MG for trading a future superstar. elvis15
STOP! mallet time I like the pick, even if it was a surprise. He greatly increased his point production when he was given an opportunity to do more than be an agitator/defensive specialist, and he still has the physical tools to be successful beyond just a 4th liner. It'll be nice to see more of him by following the AHL highlights and boxscores to get a better sense of what he's capable of.

bossram
If we're lucky, maybe Mallet turns into Andrew Shaw 2.
It's a process
Can someone who watches Utica on a regular basis tell me how Mallet is progressing? His point totals don't look that great but maybe he brings more than just points to the team? I am hopeful for him to be our next Lapierre but starting to worry he may be a bust pick at the 2nd round. Thanks.
n00bxQb
He's 21 years old ... If he were in any other league (NFL, NBA, MLB), he wouldn't even have been drafted yet ... And we're already calling him a bust ...

Justdean10
At the Prospect tourney in Penticton, this past September, I though he was one of the better players, consistently, plus I recall him being pretty physical.
wshdrvvn
i like his game right now personally. really physical and not taking dumb penalties. mallet-lain-defazio has been a very effective line for utica this year. you'd like more points sure, but i like the fact his coverage and physicality is improving.
