Cole Cassels | C

"Cole doesn't get a lot of credit because he isn't a pure offensive guy," Smith said. "When you look at hockey and NHL calibre guys, any NHL coach would see a guy like Cole and like him. He's probably more NHL-ready than a lot of guys out there. He's a 200-foot player that does the little things for us. He wins a lot of faceoffs and battles hard."

Can he pull a Horvat this coming camp? Stay tuned...

Predictions:

Draisatl finishes with 10 points.

Duclair gets a hat-trick.

Cassels has a good first 2 games, bad game 3, and strong final.

Nick Merkeley isn't as great as some CDC'ers think.

Cassels is looking like a player Van (and Utica) fans can get excited about, but I think people are starting to over-hype him. He's an overage player in a league of teenagers. I remember when everyone thought Dane Fox was going to be the Nucks sniper on the 2nd line. Now I think Cole has a more complete skill base than Fox, but I would be surprised if he is able to skip the AHL on his way to the NHL. We've yet to see how he can play against men at the pro level. It will be a whole new game for him next year.

Besides being younger then Fox at the same stage in his career Cole is a defensive specialist and that is a faster transition to the NHL then a scorer.

Fox may yet get there, he has greatly improved his skating and was really coming on toward the end of the season.

It is about time people on CDC stop making this error. As JR points out, Cassels is NOT an overage Junior. This year was his normal 19-year old season. And, while I agree with Higgy that we should not overhype Cassels, the comparison with Fox is completey misguided.

First, we should compare apples with apples -- I mean we should compare 19-year-olds with 19-year-olds. As a 19 year old Junior Cassels was far better than Fox as a 19 year old. He was also better than Gaunce, Shinkaruk (before his injury) and several first rounders from Cassel's draft year in their 19-year old seasons. The basic fact is that Cassels has developed fast and is now playing at the level you would expect of a guy drafted in the lower half of the first round, not like a 3rd rounder.

He still needs to show what he can do against pros, but McDavid is as good as professional player already and Cassels did well against him. including crushing him in the face-off circle. I know the odds are against it, but I agree Cassels has a shot to make the big team next year at 4C.

By no means a favourite but definitely a dark horse IMO.

I don't think Cassels will make the team next year, even as the 4C. Unlike Horvat, he doesn't have to be sent back down to the OHL if he didn't crack the team next year. Unless there's some injuries or we let go a majority of our UFA C, I don't think Canucks will try to get him playing in the NHL and will prefer to send him down to get more minutes and play in all situations in the AHL. But I can see him being the 1st call up if he plays a somewhat similar style to his junior career.

The only thing Richardson (or pretty much any UFA 4C) brings over Cassels is pro experience and a few pounds.

I would give him a shot at Van this year, the guy has got incredible vision. It's hard to say if he could bring that up to the NHL so early but I would like to see him given a chance.

I would love to see him alongside a real sniper and someone who goes to the net.

So, in other words, Vrbata and...Burrows?

Not many others fit the descriptions.

The poster did mention "someone who goes to the net".

Vrbata

The closest thing we have to a sniper who goes to the net is Jake Virtanen, and we don't know yet how well he will translate to big league.

I think he meant "sniper" and "someone who goes to the net" as two different people. Y'know, like how there's two wingers along the center.
