Age:21 Lucic before his breakout season 50GP 9g 11a 20pts 44PIM -7

Age:22(23?) Kassian so far this season

50GP 10g 6a 16pts 99PIM -3

Keep in mind, Lucic spent chunks of the season with Savard(before his injury).

This deserves a facepalm seriously,

Age:21 Lucic before his breakout season 50GP 9g 11a 20pts 44PIM -7""

This was his freaking down year.

Guess what he did at age 20?

Age:20 season 72GP 17G 25A 42PTS.

I ****ing hate it when people say that Kassian is a fail of a power forward because of what Lucic accomplished at the age of 20.

Lucic is like the fastest power forward to develop in like the last two decades. Neely, Bertuzzi, Okposo, Benn etc. have all taken a significant amount of years [EDIT: compared to Lucic (albeit a couple years at least)] to be a nightly force after they were drafted. Lucic took only two. If anything, Lucic is the mythical beast of the NHL. There is no player of his kind who has developed as fast as he has.

People need to stop comparing Lucic's development to Kassian's and use that comparison to call Kassian a bust.

Neely and Benn were already tearing it up at Kassian's age. Bertuzzi is the only comparable that is similar to Kassian but even he was a bit more productive on the Isles throughout his first three seasons.

Comparing Kassian to most of these other power-forwards is futile since most of them were already putting up big points at Kassian's age. Just let time tell with Kassian.

Most powerforwards develop around the age of 23 or younger. Only Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen were late bloomers.

I will admit that people like Benn and Neely had already been putting up big numbers by Kassian's age now, but either way I'm just using those players to pose an example that none of them broke out onto the scene as an impactful power forward as fast as Lucic did.

Yes, Neely was 20 when he put up 31 points but that was at a time that Barry Pederson put up 107 points. We are already in February and Crosby (arguably the best player in the world) only has 75 points. The best player in the NHL at that time was Gretzky and he finished the season with 196 points.

Give the kid time,,, points are a combination of a lot of factors. Powerplay time, linemates, ice time, and strength of team. Kassian is doing great with the time and linemates he has had for the majority of the year. In the past 12 games he must have 7 or 8 points playing on a second line so he will be just fine.... If his great passes were finished he would certainly have a few more A definate keeper for police and talent!!

  • 1 month later...

I think he's starting to get "it." He's going to be filthy next year.

The elusive playmaking winger for Kesler winger, I think we've found him.

I think it's more the case that people are starting to get that he's got it.

There have been a lot of slanted perceptions about his play from day 1 imo.

Hey guys and gals. Just came back from today's game and want to give a few notes on Kass's play from a neutral point, no bias involved. I know you might think I am cause I like the guy but this is real talk according to today's Hawks game so take it for what it's worth:

- Zack was easily the best Canuck player out there and was maybe even was the best player from both teams. He played like a machine and was flying everywhere. Whenever he had the puck, honestly - no exaggeration, fans would get excited cause they saw the it factor he played wih tonight. He was on the money throughout the game and seemed like he got played a ton of minutes from what I saw.

- His passing really really is just amazing, simply put. Just a deadly passer and can feed the puck to a player from anywhere...had this one backhand sauce that went a couple dozen feet down the ice and 10 or so feet in the air and perfectly placed in on Daniel's stick.

- Skating is tremendous and he goes like the wind. Very smooth skater, ankle broke a Hawks player early in the game and it leads to him being a big, big threat. Created many scoring chances and his shots are very smartly taken.

- Kassian's play without the puck was much improved today and seems his awareness in that sense has gone up a lot. His position was solid, stick on the ice, looking up, and just had a good feel to everything around him, his surroundings. Pretty sure he had an assist today too and really was one of his best games this year close to a couple other great games he's played also this campaign. Also he's back checking and his defensive play was great. Wasn't lazy, also knew where his man was and never gave room for him to move around in.

- He'a throwing around his body intelligently and not taking any unnecessary penalties cause of it. He is a big body, can do a lot if damage but is slowly getting into the physical department of it. His skating is tremendous and he can really give it to a player but he's smart, isn't careless and is putting it all together. Forechecking was good too.

Looked like a bull out there and was the shining star from the blue and green today. Played an excellent game and showed the glimpse of the power forward he can be. When he says his idol was Big Bert and wants to be like him and people mock him for putting such high expectations, think again cause he can easily become that type of player. Take of your homer glasses (me included), judge him from a neutral point without bias and you really will see he is nothing but a gem. Played like a premier power forward tonight and did everything right...believe me or not, this is how he played and take this for whatever it's worth :)

I will give him props. He has dramatically improved since the deadline. I look forward to seeing if he can come back next year after a strong training camp and elevate his game to the next level.
