Apparently the Jets would like Hutton for Trouba.

interesting 1-1 offer especially if stecher works out

Hutton's a lefty, and Trouba's a righty.  Works for them, but not for us.  We trade a dman, and don't you think it should be for an elite (young) forward?

Part of me jumps all over that.  The other part of me remembers who is agent is and knows how the player/team relationship will end at some point.  It would be a when not if.

It sounds nice on paper... unfortunately we Trouba would be as unhappy here as Winnipeg.

He is unhappy because he is playing on his off side (left) and is not getting enough good minutes (although he is getting 22 minutes per game).  He has not proven he can score at a pace better than even Tanev can.

Who would he bump off the right side to get more minutes than that?  Do we play him on his off side but then switch him to the right side for the PP to play on the first unit with Edler and hope he can keep his head on straight with that sort of complication.  We finally are pretty solid on D, I would argue we aren't any better off trading either Hutton (with certainly another piece going that way) or Tanev.

Edler-Trouba

Sbisa-Tanev

Tryamkin-Gudbranson

... effectively zero offense on that D, worse than last year.

I am happy to take a long look at:

Edler-Tanev

Hutton-Gudbranson

Sbisa-Larsen

Tryamkin-Stecher

If not enough goals materialize this season, you try to trade Tanev or Edler (with some sweetener) for a top pairing offensive D man next offseason.  Edler might be a lot more willing to waive his NTC if he knows he isn't going to be protected in the expansion draft.... at least he can retain some control over where he agrees to go to.

Don't worry, Benning said that he likes the Canucks D as it is and is not interested in making a deal for a RHD.

Look at the depth:

  1. Edler Tanev
  2. Hutton Gudbranson
  3. Sbisa Larsen
  4. Tryamkin Stecher
  5. Pedan Biega

That's some nice balance.  Good work Jim!

And if the Jets want a top 4 lefty, the Canucks weaken the left and over stack the right.  No thanks, find another trade partner.

It looks great for sure. But in theory if we pull off Hutton for Trouba, we could effectively flip Tanev for a top six forward. Seems like a win-win imo.

Won't Tanev be a better stay at home partner to Juolevi?

Right now probably. But it's unlikely Juolevi makes the team this year. And with Tanev gone our future defense would look like

Juolevi - Trouba

Tryamkin - Gudbranson

Where's Monty?  I would like to know what Jet's fans think of value in a Hutton for Trouba trade.

Leaves the Canucks shallow on the left side, and creates a problem on the right, where both Tanev and Gudbranson are too good to be playing bottom pairing minutes.

On the Jets side, Canucks would have to add to it. Hutton is incredibly interesting, but hasn't proven more than one season, which is why they'd have to add.

The value isn't far off, but the biggest thing is the fact that they'd be trading within conference, to another team that they'll be trying to beat out for a wild card position.

Thanks.  I knew you could give us the Jet's POV.

We have a lot of options at forward too. Maybe Winnipeg would covet a guy like Gaunce or Etem as well?

Not at all, unfortunately. The Jets have a lot of young talent right now, all jockeying for one of the final spots on the roster. Here are the players that are fighting for the final 2-3 spots:

- Kyle Connor: the belief is he will get one of the spots, but they aren't trying to rush him.

- Brandon Tanev: likely fighting for 4th line

- Andrew Copp: Made it last year, but lots of competition this year

- Jack Roslovic: Has been playing incredibly well so far.

- Chase De Leo: Hard hitting and has some skill, got in a few games last season and is looking to crack the 4th

- Brendan Lemieux

- Nic Petan

- Scott Kosmachuk

Far too many of their own developed players that have all been playing solid hockey. They owe it first to their own, home grown talent to crack the lineup.

Gaunce for Trouba might be fair?  Would we need to add the Columbus second?
