A co-owner of a Carl’s Jr. restaurant near the central Alberta town of Red Deer was ordered to stop handling food after video showed him violating the province’s food regulations.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) told Global News they received the videos on Aug. 8, though they were taped by a “member of public” in February and March 2017.

Andrew Minnes identified himself as the person who provided the videos. He told Global News he was the general manager at the restaurant from when it opened in February 2015 to April 30, 2017.

As the manager, Minnes said he had access to security camera footage, which he monitored from time to time to make sure everything in the restaurant was running smoothly. When a staff member mentioned the health violations, Minnes said he checked for himself and then got a recording.

“I wanted to go through the right channels,” Minnes said. “I felt like AHS were the guys that dealt with this stuff, so I just wanted to make sure they were involved.”

Minnes said after bringing the video to the co-owner, partner and a consultant who deals with store audits, there was nothing done internally to address the issue.

“I spoke with the owner shown in the video and showed him the footage and he basically just ignored me,” he said. “It was strange.”

AHS said an investigation was launched and confirmed the co-owner of the Red Deer-area location, shown in the video, did not have government-required food safety training.

An issue was ordered to the franchise owner by AHS on Aug. 9:

“…requiring the restaurant’s co-owner to stop handling food immediately and successfully complete an approved food safety training course, as well as demonstrate both knowledge and appreciation for the importance of safe food handling to the satisfaction of Alberta Health Services, as verified by AHS, physically at the Carl’s Jr. location, prior to handling food again.”

AHS said the co-owner has since completed the course. The AHS order names the man as Jack Webb.

“The conditions of the order have now been fully complied with and as such, a notice of compliance will be delivered on Aug. 23.”

AHS said it will continue to inspect the restaurant with an “enhanced inspection schedule.”

Their previous inspections hadn’t found any violations or concerns at that location, AHS said.

A Global News request to Carl’s Jr. was not answered. Staff reached by telephone at the location in question declined to provide comment.

Effin nasty.  I seriously hope none of you had any BBQ burgers at that Red Deer Carl Jr.'s.   Not sure if the video shows up in my post but it shows the owner mixing BBQ sauce with his arm, then he moves a garbage can and handles food again without washing and uses dirty utensils to mix food.

Side note:  Over a year since I stopped eating fast food!

heh....anybody remember this old video:

Now bears will literally eat almost ANYTHING (garbage, crap, etc.,)....it is VERY telling it doesn't help itself of anything from them lol  (edit:  I noticed from some of the video comments that the bear might have been euthanized....poor bear).

The sushi place I frequent lit up like a Christmas tree. Needless to say I had to find a new one.

Someone at work told me about this. Not surprised. I stopped eating fast food a while ago. For health but also because I don't like strange teenagers making my food.

Phew! I typed in a few of the restaurants I frequent. Most had very good records. One of them was a bit concerning, but all the red flags took place 3-4 years ago, has been good since.

Thanks for the heads up on that site! Bookmarked!
