So I'm making this post for fun. Canucks in general have had poor drafting since the very beginning and have had the odd gem in the first round let alone in rounds that follow. I chose to include drafts from 2000 and onwards in this thread to be recent, but also because in 1999 we found 2 franchise players in the first round (Sedins). This will go up to the year Bo Horvat was drafted as picks in the past few years are still to break in.

For each year I have included who we took, what we could have had (I only choose to include players who were taken up to 15 positions after a player we took to try to keep players approx in the same draft area), and some others noticeable players we could have had that were not near any of the selection areas we had.

This is taken from hockeydb.com and I'll be honest I may have missed some players we could have had while doing this.

Thank You all and hope you enjoy.

If you guys appreciate this let me know and I will continue for 2003 and on wards in the future.

It's somewhat interesting, but the "what we could've had" comes across as too wistful for my liking. If you want to make a good team out of a draft, don't label as "what we could've had", it sounds way too negative.

You don't necessarily need to recreate this type of thing. It's been done (albeit back in 2014):

https://canucksarmy.com/2014/05/20/we-think-the-vancouver-canucks-may-have-a-scouting-problem/

It's basically a summary of what would have happened had we fired all our scouting staff and just drafted the next highest scoring CHL forward with each pick:

article_921851a6-30fc-475f-b089-0fe7cead

You can give the whole article a read, but 4000 more games, almost a thousand more goals and over 1500 more assists from the players we could have drafted is pretty impressive/damning. Of course, those players' development might have been different and any other variables could have played a part, but you'd have to think we'd have been better off, even if we had to trade a few of those players (all forwards) for a few defencemen.

It's interesting to look at on the surface, but it doesn't take into account other factors such as trades. RJ Umberger looks like a solid pick for us, until you realize he never played a game for us. It then goes on to say we "could have" had Derek Roy. Well Roy actually played more games for us than Umberger did, so it is kind of a flawed concept.

I think it's incomplete to point fingers at drafting without considering developing......especially with picks outside of the top 10 draft positions. Nobody reaches their potential without great mentors and coaches, sports medicine, teammates......and opportunities.  This is not unlike other professions.  Crazy to think of how many great careers have been lost over the years just because of a poor matching process at the draft (i.e. players flourish differently in different environments and the draft takes that power away from the players to some degree).  Given the horrendous "draft record" the Canucks have had, it's also likely that their development record has been poor.

Honestly, what's the point?  There was a better player available *most* of the times that a GM drafts a guy, and sometimes that better player is significantly better.  But there is a lot that goes into assessing talent and usually GMs get it wrong to some degree.  You can cherry pick all the better players after the fact, but I just don't see the point.  It's no secret our drafting has generally not been very good over the years, but even if it was better your stats wouldn't likely change that much.

Our drafting was horrid under Burke and nonis But benning is trying to make up for lost time asap by taking on reclamation projects and such

But every team has bad picks and lucky picks as well

so it’s a mute point at the end of the day

plus all teams are picking kids. Except for a very few, you just don't know how they are going to mature. Take Jake e.g., you can see now what we were hoping to see in Year 1 of his ELC, but he needed 2 years to grow up. Its very hard to predict when a guy is going to be mature enough to handle the NHL, sometimes it never happens for excellent junior players.

LETS FACE THE FACTS,

CANUCKS DRAFTING HAS BEEN QUITE UNDERWELMING,IN FACT IT SUCKED,UP UNTIL MR BENNING STARTED US ON THE ROAD TO GREATNESS ( WE HOPE).

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT WE WOULD CONTINUE TO DRAFT POORLY AND NOT JUST FIRE SOME OF THOSE SCOUTS

.I KNOW IT'S A CRAP SHOOT TO FIND GOOD PLAYERS BUT SERIOUSLY,WHAT WOULD REALLY HELP IS IF WE WERE TO GET OUR FIRST EVER FIRST OVERALL PICK!

THAT'S RIGHT IN 47 GOING ON 48 YEARS OUR TEAM HAS NEVER HAD ONE.

ANY WONDER WE HAVE NO STANLEY CUPS.

As inconsistent as Burke's drafting was, he DID draft two likely HHOFers/Art Ross trophy winners and a Selke winner.  I wouldn't call it THAT bad.

And the team was bleeding money then - we didn't have an owner willing and able to spend $$$$.  That puts additional pressures on a GM.

Sad fact:  in the 2002 entry draft the Canucks selected 11 players.  One of these selections played 11 NHL games with zero points and one played 1 game (3 mintes ice time).  None of the rest ever played a game in the NHL.  That speaks volumes to the quality of drafting (scouting ?).
