Not sure why Gagner has turned into the scapegoat. He is not the reason ESPN just rated the Canuck forwards as #31 in the league. (And the forwards are the strength of the team.)

Yes, Gagner has been somewhat disappointing-- as have virtually all the UFA acquisitions made by Benning. And yes, he is overpaid for what he does. But, as with Eriksson, that is on Benning, not on Gagner.

It is like fans want to blame guys like Gagner and Eriksson for the team's poor performance (which has been dismal for the last three years with the worst overall record in the NHL over that time, and has been dismal in the preseason this year) instead putting the responsibility where it belongs -- which is on Benning.

Probably some poor seasons were inevitable but why waste resources on expensive vets like Eriksson and Gagner (and Sutter and Guddy) instead of maximizing the acquisition of draft picks? If the objective was to provide some physical toughness to protect younger players, that could be achieved with cheap UFAs or on the waiver wire. But it makes no sense to blame Gagner and Eriksson for those decisions.

On what planet is a shade over $3m, for a whopping () 3 years, 'overpaying' for a +/- 40 point veteran player who can play all 3 positions, up and down your lineup? Particularly on a rebuilding club with very little leverage.
