HerrDrFunk
I appreciate Bob just going with the average between 11.5 and 11.7.
Provost
That is the best they could have hoped for. Still going to be a tough dance once they figure a similar length deal for Marner at $10 million or more.

JM_
Jose Christo, thats a lot of dough. Thankfully none of it is going to a improve TO's defence.
Makaramel MacKhiato
Was expecting over 12. Not a bad signing by the Leafs. That's 22.5M for 2 centers... 30M for 3 players with Nylander... Yikes... For us, 30M covers: Horvat Pettersson Edler Tanev Boeser Stecher Baertschi Hutton Virtanen....
SabreFan1
I know he won't but it would be great if Matthews "pulled a Nylander" and stopped playing hard after signing the huge contract.
Tre Mac
He'll be gone after that contract is up.

SabreFan1
I wonder why Toronto didn't push for a full 8 years. Maybe Matthews wanted 5 so he could have a shot at the Cup then skip out of town and go home to Arizona to play for the Coyotes.
HerrDrFunk
Looking at the cap situation, I have no idea how they expect to keep all of Marner, Kapanen, and Johnsson after this season (all RFA). Gardiner and Hainsey are more than likely gone at the end of the year but that only frees up 7 million and leaves two holes on D.

AM had more leverage and he got exactly the deal he wanted.

That or Matthews wants a shot at being the highest paid player in the NHL. Which he has a very legit chance of being as he'll only be 27 when it's time for his next contract. Nucker 67
TOR and EDM are throwing crazy money at players. Perhaps one day Boeser makes $10 and Pettersson makes $12, but by then Matthews will want $16+ lol

I'm willing to bet you answered your own question, although not necessarily Arizona.
SabreFan1
Just now, Jimmy McGill said: because Dubie would be fired if Matthews didn't report for the start of next season. So while Leafs fans are celebrating the signing, they should be more concerned by the fact that he wasn't willing to take on a max term contract. Jaku
The Leafs are going to have 30M+ tied up in 3 players.

Shorter term equals smaller cap hit since you aren’t buying prime UFA years. The literally couldn’t have afforded an 8 year contract which would likely have been $12.5-13 million
