But man, like what @ForsbergTheGreat said, we coulda just got someone like him via FA and used the top picks to get someone like Barrie or another defenseman, an area we need more help on. At the end of the day, I don't enjoy on $&!#ting our players as much as I've been vocal about this trade. I want Miller to prove me wrong and make me eat $&!#. He's entering his prime years, I would think playing with Petey or Bo and routinely getting 1st line minutes will probably increase his scoring. All I have to say. Sorry, but this "coulda got that in free agency" narrative is fallacious, just as it was continually trotted out about Gudbranson. There are 31 teams and only so many players, and UFAs are almost always priced above their value. If one feels differently, then please list the Miller comparables that are available this year and how much it's believed they will sign for, and how long, and why they would choose Vancouver over all the others. This is a cost-controlled player on a good contract. 3
Krzysl
J.T Miller was liked a lot by the Tampa fans. I looked through the Tampa Facebook page and forums. The more this trade digest it actually is a very good trade. We still get our lottery pick next year because we most likely will miss the playoffs and if we don’t then that means we are on the right path and the pick we lose will be a 15+ pick which we wouldn’t see the player develop for min 2 years if even developed at all. J.T. Miller brings 40-60 pts potential with durability and edge on a very decent contract. If things don’t pan out we can still trade him at deadline and re capture picks. Very good trade! 2 1

That never changed, the thing that changed was not a change in Pettersson’s role - Pettersson admitted as much in confessing that he would be much more prepared for the NHL grind in the coming season. Gaudelle too started the season at 186 lbs and ended up closer to 170. Another false premise is your assumption of why I don’t like this deal- I like the player, what I am disturbed by is the potential price. Vancouver is so thin in talent that the loss of a significant player could easily bury this team into the basement of the league and we would be giving up the compensation for our possible ineptitude to a team much better at obtaining and accumulating assets -vis. the Lightning. Vancouver is still at the stage in its rebuild where we should be accumulating picks, not giving them. Crack open and compare the rosters between Tampa and Vancouver - Miller was mostly a FOURTH liner with Tampa. We are potentially giving up a lottery pick and a third for a fourth liner? See the Marleau deal with Carolina - that should have been our trade - that is how you capitalize on having cap space. How are they thin on talent? They are thin on depth and JB just made a big move to alleviate some of those issues. That first round pick isn't going to even be an NHL player until around 2025, is it really that big of an issue? 1

JB will get trashed no matter what he does it seems lol 5
Jester13
Miller is versatile: great shot, nice passing, up high, down low, on the pp, can hit, centre, wing... Green is going to love this guy.
Hairy Kneel
I think he'll get us around 18-22 goals 100 hits be a fan favorite, hits more than Biega He'll create room for EP to have a good year points wise. I think he adds to Bo/Pearson/Lievo as hard nosed guys that can go to the net hard and get those greasy goals. But we will give the devil his due when we see what was left behind door number three, come that dreaded draft lottery day. 1

Looks like JB is on the clock, claiming the rebuild is over and he's banking on the team having major progression over the next two seasons. Overall JT is still young and locked up on a decent cap hit, so the first question is, was he worth a first? The answer is.....yes he probably is.... But the question canucks fans need to be asking is....Is that a price we can afford to make?....And that answer is....we will see, personally i'm not a big fan of moving picks that far into the future..There are too many variables to go against you. Reason being, you immediately loose value on that pick and going forwards Tampa bay gets to play with house money. Canucks aren't a JT miller away from being a contender. We aren't a JT miller away from even being a playoff lock. We still have some major missing pieces and it starts with that D core. That is the position canucks needed to be looking to move assets for to improve. Not the nice to have player like Miller.. Realistically the Miller player is the type you look to find in UFA. This year it's Dzingel, Nyquist, Lee, Ferklund and Connolly that fill a similar roll and likely for a similar price tag (maybe slightly higher). Going after a player like that in UFA allows you to use those value assets to move for a bigger need... a need that you can't typically (and wont this year) fill from UFA. Waiting for a UFA may not net you the player that you want. It may end in a bidding war and end up overpaying for their services. Dzingel is a speedy small-ish winger. Doesn't add the grit and ability to play center that Miller does. Nyqvist is decent, but is older (for those that care about the "timeline") and will likely be looking for a payout contract with term. Lee is also not going to come in at 4 years for 5.25 million. Probably closer to 6-7 for max term. Also 3 years older. Ferland is already rumoured to be looking for Tom Wilson money and has had a couple of concussion problems this past season alone. Hasn't gotten more than 41 points despite getting top 6 minutes. Connolly is a step below and while he may he a relatively decent add, I don't think he is comparable. I get your point, but to get a guy of his calibre at his age and contract. And for the record, I don't think Benning is suggesting the rebuild is over, but I believe the team has been trending exactly how I felt it should be so far where we were fighting for a wild card spot last season and either still in the wild card hunt or just squeaking into a playoff spot this upcoming season. If we miss the playoffs again, no harm no foul and I think we surely make the playoffs at the very least in the following year. I get the concern about the D and there's still a long summer ahead, so we will see if and how that will get addressed. We could easily address the defense issue through UFA but it's the same concern as the forwards in that they likely get overpaid for what they bring and that's if they even choose you to sign with. 2

I'm calling it now, once JB improves the "D", JT will get 62 pts playing with EP40 and BB6 in a couple of years Podz, Bo and Pearson will be the established 1B line future is looking bright!
