The_Rocket Posted July 15, 2020 Share Posted July 15, 2020 If rathbone has a solid rookie season this year and shows he can be an NHL Top 4 Defenseman, the Canucks could end up having 2 of their top 4 D (Rathbone and Hughes) exempt from the Expansion Draft. Opens them up the opportunity to acquire on for cheap next TDL from teams that have too many to protect and are worried about losing one for free teams like Nashville, Tampa, Carolina, Minnesota, etc. Are all going to have to leave a Top 4 D exposed in the Expansion Draft. I like him, but don’t expect him to immediately step in and be able to replace Tanev (or even replace Stecher, in terms of on-ice game value). I also think he’d be overpaid (at least right now) at anything over $2 million AAV on his next deal. I expect Tryamkin to be able to play a similar third pairing role to the one he played when here last. On hopefully a better team than then, however. I also think he’s matured and grown as a player. He still has top-4 potential in the NHL. I’m just not sure I’d bet on it. However, on a future D that likely includes Hughes and Rathbone on the left side, having a 6’8” behemoth who can skate, while playing a mostly defensive role on the right side, is probably a very good thing. We need some size, physicality, and in-zone defensive ability on the back end. I also like Tryamkin’s PK potential. Sucks we didn't see Rafferty this season because he really is a wild card right now. Don't think Rathbone and Tryamkin will hurt you on the third pair. Worst case one is struggling and Benn comes in. Maybe you sign Stecher cheap 1 year 2 million and get rid of Benn and Rafferty is your #7 to start? Ideally tho... I am loving our depth on D now let’s go.
