Gauteng covid cases continue to trend lower

  • Positivity rate still extraordinarily high

Covid cases in South Africa remain high but the spot to focus on is Gauteng, which is the province where the outbreak began. This chart shows the 7-day average of new cases.

gauteng

It's a remarkably quick fall.

Now I'm hesitant to read too much into it because positivity was 27.6% today and there's a good chance that most people who have it aren't being tested. There's also a vast migration of people from Johannesburg and Pretoria back home to rural areas for the festive period.

At the same time, the number of people in hospitals with covid-19 fell 25% last week to 5,600. Much of that is incidental infections in hospital (people who were in the hospital already and got it) but there's no sign of hospitalizations anywhere near previous waves.

hospitalizations

These are good signs for sure, that Omicron presents with milder disease and burns through quickly.  That’s exactly why we need a two week circuit breaker here.  Slow down the spread so we can get the kids vaccinated and most others boosted.  Then the mild symptoms will present in almost everyone.

I can't speak to the situation with K-12, but we haven't been given any kind of notice here at Coast Mountain College. I work in IT, so we would absolutely have to be in the loop. It's technically possible for some people to do their job strictly via web access, but there are also dozens (if not hundreds) who need access to files and applications that are only accessible by being connected to our domain. For that you would need VPN or some sort of Remote Desktop access. That isn't something that you can do with a single click....

We rin everything out of Google classroom, so it's not too huge of an issue as we use GC for in school learning as well.  I'm elementary though, so it's not too intensive

So what.

This doesn't change anything really on our end does it?

All it does is gives you someone to blame.  You lot cannot handle it being some random event.  You need someone to blame.

You lack the actual evidence that this virus came from the lab.  All you got is semantics and coincidence.   That is it.

This doesn't change what we have to do to deal with this. Follow public health initiatives.   Get vaccinated.   Simple.

The 2018-2021 project that hasn't been disclosed is this one. To stop future pandemics, you have to first understand how this one started.

"Chinese horseshoe bats harbor genetically diverse SARS-like coronavirus (SL-CoV) and their major differences are located in the receptor binding domain of S proteins (S-RBD). Some of the SL-CoV can use receptor homologues of SARS coronavirus, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE2). We hypothesize that 1) the diversity of S proteins of SL-CoVs may be due to the ACE2 polymorphorism of bats; 2) Different SL-CoVs have different ability of interspecies infection. To test the hypothesis, we will target the SL-CoV strains which use ACE2 as receptor and investigate the binding ability between the S-RBD and ACE2 of different origins and infectivity of SL-CoVs carrying different S proteins, by using techniques such as co-immunoprecipitation, binding affinity test and reverse-genetic infectious clones. The aim of this study is to understand host receptor adaptation and the risk of interspecies infection of bat SARS-like coronaviruses."

Reasonable and the right types of new restrictions

leaves schools alone and focuses on entertainment more so than anything else.

and it’s only 4 weeks so gives time to determine the factual healthcare needs and risks

Then based on actual facts on the ground here in BC they will be able to either remove or continue restrictions after Jan 18th

Press release:

The provincial health officer is implementing additional measures to address rising COVID-19 case counts that could result in increased hospitalizations and critical care admissions and the potential to overstress the health-care system.

Revised provincial health officer orders will take effect on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at 11:59 p.m.

The restrictions will extend to Jan. 18, 2022, at 11:59 p.m., and include:

  • no organized indoor social events and gatherings of any size;
  • concerts, sports games and theatres reduced to 50% seated capacity, regardless of venue size;
  • closing gyms, fitness centres and dance studios;
  • closing bars and nightclubs; and
  • limiting table sizes at restaurants, cafes and pubs to a maximum of six people per table with physical distancing or barriers.

These restrictions are in addition to the revised orders that took effect on Monday, Dec. 20.

The Ministry of Health is postponing non-urgent scheduled surgeries starting Jan. 4, 2022, to manage pressure on acute care facilities. Urgent and emergency surgeries will continue, and rescheduling will be determined through continuous monitoring of capacity and COVID-19 impacts throughout January and on a regional basis.

“COVID-19 cases continue to increase at a concerning rate, and we must take stronger measures to help protect British Columbians and ensure our health-care system is there when people need it,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “It’s a critical time in our fight against COVID-19. Now is the time for us to act, and to work together to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our loved ones safe.”

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, said: “I know everyone is looking forward to being around their family and friends this holiday season after two challenging years. These restrictions balance the need for people to come together with the people they love with the need to collectively act to slow the spread of COVID-19. We know how to get through this – by following the same measures we’ve followed in the past to protect each other.”

In addition to the provincial health officer’s orders, British Columbians are advised to get fully vaccinated if they have not already done so, to get their booster shot as soon as one is offered, to stay home if they are sick, to avoid all travel if not fully vaccinated and to follow the travel advisory issued by the federal government to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada.

The updated orders will be enacted under the Public Health Act.

Thought for sure the Kraken game at least would be no fans.  But a little earlier today the Canucks started selling additional tickets.  They need to close all concession stands.

Absolutely!  No food or booze.  People can attend the game and keep their masks on.  There would be no excuses to take off masks.

Exactly.  If the only reason people can take off their mask is to eat or drink.  Take away food and drink.  Most people can go 3 hours without eating.

Yeah, we use a VC app called Bluejeans and an LMS called Brightspace, so it isn't too bad for Instructors.

However, the rest of the staff kind of rely on their network drives and apps that reside within the domain, so most of them would need a way to access the domain remotely. We would have to know if that was a possibility a few weeks ago, in order to make that happen.

One thing that us for sure is this is a no win situation for any government

Bring in restrictions and the anti crowd will scream democracy is lost

Don't bring in any restrictions and be blamed for all of the fall out and for any deaths at all

Take the middle road like we do in bc and just try mitigation restrictions and people then scream it's prove to be just a cold and it's time to end any restrictions

No matter which the option they get roasted and the Facebook Trained experts will blame government for not following there beliefs

You are correct.

I, for one, have really liked the way that Bonny Henry has navigated this whole mess.

BC has handled Covid as well as can be hoped.

PS. Why are some almost cheering for Omnicron to be bad and more lethal? It's possible to want to be safe but still hope for the best. Is it because you feel that the warning to be safe will be more effective and heard louder if others are more scared? I want to see what happens with the hospitalization numbers and ICU numbers in the next week or two before proclaiming anything. Last I checked we were sitting at 74 in ICUs, do we have updated numbers from this week?

I do think that this might be the last big wave and that by summer we might be out of the biological part of this pandemic.  This variant is so infectious that we might just achieve enough herd immunity, though vaccination and infected, to get to endemic.  I do think the unvaxxed are still in for a very rough ride between now and summer as I think escaping infection will be tough.
