So I was just thinking considering the mess of a year of a season The Canucks had this year and their inspiring playoff performance, one cannot help that draw parallels from the Ottawa Senators 2017 playoff run and their disastrous season on and off the ice.

During their playoff runs in their respective previous years ...

  • Both teams seemed to have over achieved in their respective seasons
  • Both were eliminated in a Game 7
  • Both had starting goalies going through personal issues and overcoming to make an inspirational run

Then of course the next season, due to a series of unfortunate circumstances both on and off the ice, resulted a disaster of a season. Both teams ended up being bottom feeders next season and the case of Ottawa ...

  • Daniel Alfredsson calling out Ownership
  • Erik Karlsson controversy with ownership
  • Ownership threatening to relocate the team
  • Assistant GM getting arressted
  • Heath hazardous baby onesies
  • Incident with Karlsson's and Hoffman's wives

I don't need to list down the things that happened with the Canucks this season but the number of incidents this season if comparable and perhaps just as, if not more, newsworthy.

So as the poll question shows:

  1. Which team had it worse in their respective disastrous seasons ?
  2. Which team had a bigger fall from the previous season ?

in terms of disastrous fails Virtanen takes the cake.

ottawa marred their team that year, they could have been a cup contender.

Sens gave up a first that ended up top 5 then traded for a first that ended up top 5.

Yeah but the trading a first that ends up top 5 for playoff hopes(Duchene) then getting a first that ends up a top 5 pick from a team that had playoff hopes(Karlsson) is pretty wild and funny.

It’s like the hockey gods said thou shall have balance.

Miller could be our Stone next year. Could get a solid package for a guy of his caliber and cap hit.  Would probably be the top trade deadline target if we put him on the market next year.

The only things that are similar are both teams are rebuilding.   Massive difference as to why though.   OTT was a goal away from the cup final, looked to be starting their peak with guys like EK, Stone, Zinebanejad, etc ... always had solid goaltending with Anderson...

And then yes a lot of sideshow things piled up.   Don't forget BBQ women on fire.   Melnyk asking for a liver and getting one from a fan (paid in full)...it was bizzare.    Difference between the rebuilds is they had a ton of assets to sell and they did.    Similarities is four years in a row missing the show.   And our overall cycle probably will end up taking two years longer.   OTT 7-1-1 so are doing their best impression of not tanking at the end of the year (even better one than we did) but i'm not sure they will make them next but it's for sure  a possibility....also their Duchene pick ended up a fourth (they had the worst record - best odds as a first, COL drafted Byram).

Both teams significantly overreacted to one playoff run but Ottawa did moreso (and got bit in the ass for it).

OTT sold out with all their players entering their primes or in it.  Huge difference.  It would be very similar to what happened to the Linden team.  Not at all like these rebuilds both happened for different reasons.    The piled up picks...we did not.

The 2017-2018 nhl entry draft watched the Sens give their 4th overall pick to the Avs who selected wonder stud Cale Makar....

The Canucks have done nothing like that.

They then in 2018 took that same pick slot and selected Tkachuk, the lesser one

Not sure we're goign to be able to compare how them but both were bad teams.  This year though is an outlier for the Canucks because covid where as the Sens team was just outright awful and sold all assets

We will bounce back next year.  We had a ridiculous schedule to start the year, month layoff due to covid, and a stupid schedule to end.  Our best player will have missed most of the season, and our division was far tougher than it will be next year.  We will get a top 10 pick, add Podkolzin and shed a ton of dead weight.  EP and QH have/were not very good for the most part and will not command the salaries that they could have, their play this year probably saves us 5-6 mil in cap ober the next few years.  Long term, as much as this year sucked, this season will help us in the long haul.

Avs took Makar with their own pick. They got Byram with Ottawa’s.

Reality?  The reality is that next year we are in a division with LV, EDM, 5 bottom 10 teams, and an expansion team.  We are likely the 3rd best team in the Pacific next year.

Best tell the fans in Calgary not to bother turning up FYG they are above us as we speak come to that evey one in the Pac Div is ahead of us

If you can't recognize that our road has been infinitely more rocky than those teams this year, not sure what to tell you.

Where there's a problem there is a solution waiting to be found. Every team suffers problems ... every team!! this is not exclusive to Vancouver other deal with it and get on with it. Fans here draw up list with problems for future excuses

I'd say this is a poor analogy / trying too hard.

For this simple reason....

The youngest player among the top 8 scorers for the 2017-18 Senators was 25 year old JG Pageau.

And further - their starter was 36 years old.

The Canucks top 6 has one player over 25 - JT Miller (at 27 yrs of age).

That was a core that was in their prime (and in some cases, beyond).

Not to nit-pick, and maybe i'm wrong bit too lazy to check it up so sorry just going my memory, but believe the Duchene pick (unprotected first) ended up becoming 4th overall super stud RHD Byram.   They picked BT before the COL pick came into play, and were the worst overall team and dodged a bullet with the draft rules, that pick slipped to fourth.

But absolutely agree, the SENs are a perfect example of how a rebuild can be done if you don't have what we had anchored by the Sedins and laden with clauses.   Burrows waived ... Bieksa too.  2017 was the year our rebuild started and the re-tool was left alone with the exception of the Sedins, Edler and Tanev ...
