[Waivers] Dennis Cholowski

Recommended Posts

I'd give him a crack. The kid was playing some big and tough minutes in DET a couple of seasons ago when they lost vets to injury. Last season they brought in some more vets and reduced his role and his minutes to a manageable level, and he performed pretty well. I think he would be a good option to replace Hunt as our backup LD right now. Hunt is only signed for 1 season and he's 33 already. Cholowski could develop nicely with the big club over the next few years and be a decent young depth guy.

If a deep team like Washington is claiming him, it makes you wonder why we didn't...with Burroughs and Rathbone playing around 12 minutes as our very basic 3rd pairing last night.

This team desperately needs some sort of defensive depth after losing Juolevi and Hamonic in one off-season, let's hope JB has something planned but right now we're going in thin.

Washington isn't too deep on LD. Kempny was injured all of last season and was sent to the minors. Trevor Van Reimsdyk is a regular now and they have a 22 year old Fehervary also playing as a regular.

The guys we have on the roster are better.  If we claim a guy he has to be on our roster, which means a current player gets sent down.  Is this guy better than Hunt?  Not worth it.  Hunt plays both sides, and is an NHLer.

We could have sent Rathbone down to Abby to play top minutes and develop.  There is no reason he has to be on the big club right now.

True.  But the difference between Bone's 10-12 minutes and these lesser guys in the same role is a lot.  Bone is just too good (even in limited minutes) to not play ahead of guys like Hunt, or the waiver wire ones.

Bone is good, but could get alot better playing 20+ minutes a night.  He also could learn how to kill penalties down in Abby.  He won't learn how to do that in practice or sitting on the bench.

All true, but the gap between what Bone brings to the big club and what the lesser guys do is too big for Green to want to do that.

True.  But knowing Green he won't play Bone every night which will further hurt his development.  You can make the argument both ways whether to keep him with the big club or send him down to Abby.  Bone just doesn't have the pure raw talent of Hughes and needs to be more defensively responsible, especially if he is on the 3rd pairing.

Green is playing 2 right hand shots on the PK right now in order to avoid playing Bone on the PK.  Not sure how that is going to work out long term for the rest of the season.

How often can we send Bone to play in Abbotsford, and call him up again?  Is there a limit on that?  He could play on both clubs.  50 games up and 30 down, or  something.
