Cap hits are key in this league. It’s not necessarily about which team has the best player(s), but rather, which team has the best players at the best “bang for the buck.” When the Leafs signed Tavares for 11 million, I smiled because I knew that the Leafs chances of winning the cup were about to decrease substantially. As a result of JT’s contract, guys like Matthews, Marner, and Nylander signed premium non-discounted contracts which basically forced useful role players like Kadri and Bozak to move on. Value contracts are key in this league. Cost controlled elite talent + depth = championship. Who would you rather have had? McDavid at 12.5 million or Mackinnon at 6.5 million?
