while i am pleased to get the RHD we need Im having a hard time getting excited about the pick. Not sure this helps us for another couple years. Perhaps we can still sign a player to fill the void on the back end this FA class. Mayfield or Graves would be a nice addition to the D lineup.Willander wanting to play for the Canucks is a nice touch.

Drafting for immediate results has hardly worked out. Why insist on it?

Seriously? I see a lot of very happy Canucks fans with just a couple of trolls spouting their usual crap pretending to be clever and knowledgeable. Where are you looking, HFBoards?

The Thomas Drance and I guess Jamie Dodd congregation are in arms about passing Benson.

That is why I wanted Benson gone before 11 so we don't have to deal with this.

One thing to add is the worrisome that not only American but now Canadian born players is the risk they could bolt from small market Canadian teams (not named Toronto) to  US teams as soon as they hit UFA status or even sooner. For some reason Vancouver has been a desirable place for Scandinavian born players to live and raise families.

I know there are exception, but it seems as if now more than ever that this is becoming a reality. IMO it’s going to be a factor moving forwards with drafting and acquiring talent.

NA players bolting from Canadian teams does not apply to Toronto, Vancouver, and to a lesser extent Montreal.

Toronto is center of the hockey universe.

Montreal have the history.

Vancouver is arguably the most livable city in NA especially when you are paid millions. We always hear players have every Canadian team on their no trade except for Vancouver all the time.

The problem we have right now is we suck. Once we are finally a contender, players will be flocking to us just like it was back in 2008-2012 during the Sedin era.

It is the other Canadian eams that are subject to player flocking out.

I've been busy so I missed the draft, I'm thrilled we took a D high. So glad we didn't trade our pick.

I want D in the 2nd going forward too but getting one at 11OA is fantastic.

Our following two picks were also D in the 3rd round.

Brzustewicz and Mynio look pretty good. People have called Brzustenwicz a player who had lay 1st/early 2nd talent and Mynio a Slavin/Tanev clone.

Amazing, more D in the pool has been a huge need. I like the sound of both.

When Reinbacher, Simashev, Danielson and Dvorksy all went top 10 and no one beyond Benson really fell I can see why Allvin just jumped at Willander.

Real-time I had the same reaction.  With the call to Buffalo I was at first thinking yeah trade down.. but we needed C or D in the first round and all our guys were off the board.  Needed to just make the pick.

(Assuming Moore is seen as a winger and ASP as a redundant piece with Hughes/Hronek in their mid 20s.)

Yeah, I reaaaaaally wanted a center but a high end RD has been a draft need for yeaaars. So glad we didn't opt for a winger.

Those three tests seem to be fairly meaningful/translatable, with the theme of explosive power in his legs.

The jumps yes absolutely.
Wingate is more looking at anaerobic capacity and anaerobic power output.  So not just ability to put out raw power but an estimate aerobic capacity and the ability to produce power when the brain and muscles are pickled with lactic acid. So producing speed and power late in shifts and late in games.
Given he is a coaches kid I am not surprised he did very well on testing.

I think Allvin did a good job scouting his personality, he seems like a solid kid and you can just see a future leader in him. I see the Heiskanen comparisons, boy would we be lucky if he pans out like that. Willander was always going to be our pick IMO no matter who was on the board, even if it was a toss up between him and Reinbacher I think Allvin goes with the Swede now.

Looks like a great fit. Whether this is BPA or best positional need or best character, it ticks all our boxes.

He'll surely be a consistent top-4 defenceman for us for a long time. Maybe not flashy, may never score 60-80 points a year (although he might...) but it'll be nice to see him gain some muscle, get a bit bigger and play against some older kids in the NCAA. Willander really was a fairly safe pick, I think he's got such a low risk of being a bust.
