What's Your Opening Night Lineup?

I think as it stands...

Mikheyev - Pettersson - Kuzmenko

PDG - Miller - Boeser

Beauvillier - Bleuger - Garland

Joshua - Aman - Hoglander

Studnicka

Pearson?

Hughes - Cole

Soucy - Hronek

Hirose - Myers

Irwin

Rathbone

Johansson?

Juulsen?

Lots of question marks to answer in training camp. It would be huge if Pearson could play solid 3rd line, PK minutes but he is quite expensive. Huge off-season and training camp for Hoglander and Rathbone vs Hirose who have to prove they're ready for the NHL. Same goes for Podkolzin and PDG, that 2nd line spot is up for grabs too. On defence, it'll just be a matter of who fits in where and you know Soucy, Cole and even Hronek will move around Hughes a lot over the course of the season.

Overall a similar forward group plus a 3C who can win faceoffs and kill penalties, and a couple of big tough defencemen is what we needed. Surely our PK improves a lot after these moves but a lot of it comes down to coaching as well as personnel so we'll see. Demko must be happy, Cole and Soucy will really help clear the crease, let's just hope their skating is up to scratch. We essentially lose OEL and come in next year with 3 new guys (Hronek, Soucy, Cole) who have all come from fairly decent defences.

Honestly, you lost me with PDG in the top 6. I didn’t bother to read the rest.

thing is, PDG knows his role and played it to a T under Tocchett.

wouldnt be surprised if he comes into camp ready to have a great season.

Yeah people laugh about PDG in the top 6, but once he was placed next to Miller, that's when JT started producing again.  You don't always need 6 bona-fide stars in the top 6.  Heck, even one of the greatest lines in franchise history had a 2C or maybe even 3C level centre on it in Brendan Morrison.

100%, same goes for another one of our best lines in franchise history. Alex Burrows was a prototypical 3rd line checking pk specialist before he was flanking the twins.

Beauvillier - Pettersson - Kuzmenko

Mikheyev - Miller - Garland

Pearson - FA/Trade - Hoglander

Joshua - Bleuger - Podkolzin

Hughes - Trade

Soucy - Hronek

Cole - FA/Trade/Depth Player

Demko

Bench

Aman

Irwin

Put Beau on the 1st line so he can pad his stats and we can look to flip at TDL. Played well with Pettersson and Kuz anyways.

Need a 3C or I guess we can have Bleuger play 3C..

Management wants to be competitive so look for another RHD to play with Hughes.

Hopefully but unlikely we can move out Boeser and Myers. Replace Myers with cheaper option for 3 RHD.

Maybe our lineup will look like

Thing - Thing - Thing

Thing - Thing - Thing

Thing - Thing - Thing

Thing - Thing - Thing

Thing

Thing - Thing

Thing - Thing

Thing - Thing

Thing/Thing

Starter: Thing

Backup: Thing

Coached by: Thing

Managed by: Thing

That looks almost perfect.

Can we just swap out the coach thing and get one better at thinging.

With day one of free agency in the books, I'm asking you what you think our opening night lineup looks like. You can suggest trades will be made, but try and keep it as specific as possible :)

Kuzmenko - Petey - Beauvillier (duh)

Di Giuseppe - Miller - Boeser (one of our best line combos last year and Tocchet loves PDG)

Mikheyev - Blueger - Podkolzin (Speed, skill, and defensively responsible, may struggle finishing chances though)

Joshua - Aman - Studnicka (Another successful line from last year, although Studnicka took faceoffs iirc)

Dries (Tocchet's guy, swap with Aman if he starts cold)

*Pearson will probably not be able to play night one, but as he comes in he can either push Podkolzin or Studnicka out

Hughes - Peeke (Solid in transition both ways, and Peeke can be Hughes' long term partner)

Cole - Hronek (Similar to above, Hronek drives offense while Cole makes up for defensive deficiencies. Cole is in the top 4% when it comes to defensive play, let's see if he can continue that)

Soucy - Myers (two big men with very different styles, hoping Soucy's aggressiveness forces Myers to do the same without being pure chaos)

Demko (duh)

Martin (Start Arty in Abbotsford unless he runs away with the backup job. If he proves he's ready, trade Martin for a mid pick and leave Abbotsford for the kids Sawchenko and Tolopilo)

I'm assuming we deal with Columbus around Garland for Peeke. They're moving towards contention and Garland would be one of the most proficient players at 5v5 for them. Peeke is an odd man out in Columbus but I could very much see him flourishing here. Strong along the boards and defensively responsible, perfect for Tocchet.

PP1:

Kuz - Miller - Beauvillier

Hughes - Pettersson

No change from last year.

PP2:

Mikheyev - Blueger - Boeser

Hronek - Podkolzin

Get's Boeser out of the faceoff dot and into a more prominent passing role. Mikheyev and Podkolzin can also switch if we need his speed at the point.

PK1:

Blueger - Pettersson

Soucy - Cole

One of the best starting PK groups in the league. Soucy has a great first pass and Blueger isn't slow, so look for lots of shorthanded opportunities.

PK2:

Miller - Mikheyev

Hughes - Peeke

Again, focusing on aggression. Hughes can feed Miller and Mikheyev all day long with stretch passes, and it allows us to take some risk knowing we have one of the top goalies in the league.

Who's Peeke? PK?

id be open to even adding in a 4th as a sweetener

make it irresistable for edmonton

Save the 4th and add Rathbone. He's not in the OP's lineup and would also be claimed off waivers.

Not the same thing. Burrows willed himself to the top line on sheer determination and an insane work ethic. Nothing against PDG. I actually like him on the 4th line but he doesn’t have the same offensive production as Burrows did and it’s not from a lack of effort. He just doesn’t have the skill set of Burrows.

Kuz - Petey- Mik

Hogs - Miller - Boeser

Pearson - Blueger - Podz

Joshua - Aman - ?

Hughes - Cole

Soucy - Hronek

? - Myers

Trade Garland for a #6 dman.
Hogs is ready for a real shot in the top 6.
Unfortunately, I think Pearson will return.
He wasn’t great before, and I think he’ll be worse now.

I think we should pick up a real big, bad SOB for that 4th line spot.
A legit old school cop out there to keep the other team honest.

If I get my way and we move Beau and Garland, trade for Pesce, and sign Suter and Asplund...

Mik, Petey, Kuz

Hoglander, Miller, Boeser

Pearson, Suter, Asplund

Podkolzin, Blueger, Joshua/Aman

Joshua/Aman

Hughes, Pesce

Cole, Hronek

Soucy, Myers/Bear (assuming we eventually move Myers/Bear gets healthy)

Irwin, Juulsen

Demko, Martin

Pdg deserves to be in the top 9 at least.  You cant discount that he probably had the best chemistry with miller out of all our wingers. He provides a puckhound style that we need

Bmo at the very least was a 2c.

The guy came out of college as a legit stud.  His hockey iq was off the charts.
