R.Kesler #17
With the season almost over and the Canucks being out of playoff contention, we can now look at re-signing players. We have a quite a few of players that are either UFAs or RFAs. What do you think their contracts would look like (term and cost)? Here is the list UFA Henrik Sedin Daniel Sedin Darren Archibald Nic Dowd RFA Sven Baertschi Markus Granlund Jake Virtanen Reid Boucher Derrick Pouliot Troy Stetcher

I don't think he's earned anywhere near that. His qualifying offer is 2 mil and I doubt he'll get much more than that (https://www.capfriendly.com/qualifying-offer-calculator). I'd actually be fine with the Canucks taking it to arbitration tbh. Dzingel is only making 1.8 for a very comparable player. Dowd might get a 2 way offer, but he'd definably be bound for Utica. 6string
Reid and Dowd are on the outside looking in, the rest will be on short term deals but Baertschi and Granlund won't make as much as you posted I don' t think.

Rush17
UFA Henrik Sedin - Re-signs for 2.5 Million Daniel Sedin - Re-signs for 2.5 Million Darren Archibald - Signs a 2 way deal for 2 years. (battles for spot in camp) Nic Dowd - Walks or gets signed & waived RFA Sven Baertschi - Traded at draft Markus Granlund - Re-signs at 1.5 Million per over 2 years Jake Virtanen - Re-signs for 1.2 Million for 1 year (show me deal. Green/Jim will challenge him he will accept said challenge) Reid Boucher - Let walk. (Hasn't been effective since the Dallas blowout game.) Derrick Pouliot - Re-signs for 2 years at 2.5 Million (bridge show me deal. Unless Jim can lock him to term cheap) Troy Stetcher - Re-signs for 4 years at 3.5 Million (Good term for the team and reasonable cap hit as he grows. He essentially takes a haircut if his progression continues over year 3 & 4)

He essentially takes a haircut if his progression continues over year 3 & 4) Pretty reasonable numbers. Here is my take with some reasoning. UFA 1. Sedins. Could go either way, but my guess is that they retire. At most 1 more year but only if they sign for a low number like 2.5 each. At most 3. 2. Archie. I think he gets rewarded with a one-way deal at about 700K, maybe even 750K. Could make the team as a resident tough guy on the 4th line. He is also good on the PK. He is second among forwards in PK time on ice per game played (after Sutter). His goals against per 60 minutes is 8.1. That is better than Sutter (8.3) or Gaunce (9.2). He is not that far away from the best PK forward on the team among guys who have played significant minutes: Horvat at 7.1. 3. Dowd. I don't think he gets re-signed. His 2 pts in 36 games this year is just way too low for him to be worth a contract. His defensive and PK play are okay (but not as good as Archie) and certainly not enough to make up for his complete lack of offence. RFA 4. Baertschi gets re-signed at 3 million per year for 2 years. For the last couple of years he has been playing at a legitimate second line level (albeit just barely), but any legitimate top six forward is worth 3 million. His defence is not bad and he has very good speed. 5. Granlund. Yes, 1.5 per year is reasonable for Granlund, probably for 2 years. This year, his 12 pts in 53 games is barely respectable for a 4th liner and is not even at the legitimate 3rd line level. Yes, he played tough minutes, including a lot of shutdown, and did a decent job, but it is not at all clear that he even makes the team next year. 6. Virtanen. I previously argued that he should get 1 million per year for two years. He still has a lot to prove even to show he is a solid 4th liner on a good team. 7. Boucher. Don't think he gets re-signed. Not worth a contract with all the young guys who will turn pro and need contracts next year. Maybe he gets an AHL contract but he is not good to play on the good NHL team. 8. Pouliot and Stecher: I think 2 years each at 2.5 million. They both need to show they can be more than 3rd pairing Ds if they are going to get more than that. Yes, they have both played in the top 4 at various times this year and it has not been pretty, especially with Pouliot. He has a team-worst -21 +/-, despite getting somewhat protected minutes most nights. The striking thing about this list from my point of view is that it is not clear if any of these players will be on the team two years from now. The Sedins will likely be retired and everyone else has a lot to prove to stay ahead of the young guys coming up.

I believe Stecher has played much better than Pouliot, and he competes at a higher level compared to Pouliot. In addition, I see Baer being possibly traded at the deadline. A guy like Leipsic has looked better in his few games with that Bo and Boeser line, than Baer. Jake has been looking good lately, needs to work hard this offseason. Also, I think the Sedins will play one more year. Archie is a solid 4th liner for this team, smart, physical player.

Archie has surprised me and I now see him as DD's replacement. He has a big body too and he is not afraid to use it. Along with Gaunce and maybe Gadjovich/MacEwen I can see them form a formidable 4th line. Pouliot and Stech on the other hand (I do like Stech's play a lot more than Pouliot) are the type of player who I could see displaced by the likes of McEneny and Brisbois/Sautner/Candela/etc if they progress.
