Recommended Posts

Who's the bad@$$$ armchair GM 'round here? Many are predicting a dramatic move from the Coilers. Impress your CDC buds by forecasting the teams involved. This move must be consummated by Feb 25th. Win a wknd for two at the West Ed mall!(byot)

Here it is...

Draisatl

Habs: Drouin, Kotkaniemi, 2019 2nd

This feels very similar to the previous big Oiler deals where they trade a more proven player for a slightly younger, riskier option.  The trade Hall for Larsson, they trade Eberle for Strome.  Just didn't work for them at all.  Draisaitl for Drouin feels very similar, and while I think Kotkaniemi could be the real deal, Edmonton needs to start competing soon, rather than adding a rookie for the long term.

For a short while, they had cachet(landed McD, new bldg)..now that has gone the way of the dodo. Squandered.

No FA's will ever sign there, cept past-prime guys for exorbitant sums.

They need to acquire guys with lots of term locked in, or youth they can RFA control. In 3 or 4 yrs if that don't work, you sell McD & start over with fully scorched earth.

The Oilers are all-in with their two massive signings McDavid and Drai - that is what they have tied their wagon to and what they need to work with.    Both are great young players and few teams can match those two with any of their two players.   Given that, they have shown an inability to develop players that are not already top end talents.   Soooo, work with your strengths.

What this armchair would do is:

  • Trade as many picks as you can for top 6 wingers and top 4 D
  • Get rid of the Lucic experiment somehow
  • Stop looking for a goalie to solve the worse Dman depth in the NHL

Trading their 2019 and 2020 first and second round picks, for example, could net them two top end players.   They could package one of those picks with Lucic to a team with a load of cap space for example.

To not try and win before McDavid is into his sixth or seventh season is to ruin the gift of a generational player.

After debacles like the Rhino/Barzal travesty, they can't risk this again. Pitchforks & molotive cocktails would prob ensue.

They've really painted themselves into the proverbial corner!

Why do you want to put yourself through the misery of even being an armchair GM of that dumpster fire? You better order up a lot more sake Nux.........not good for your health.

Let the new GM in Edmonton (MacTavish) take on that headache.

Has a GM ever resigned? thats maybe a good place to begin.

Barring that, its time to burn picks and prospects for "the now" like drunken sailors.

Silfverberg for Edmontons 2nd and Tyler Benson.

2020 1st for Ferland.

Puljujarvi, 2019 3rd and 2020 2nd for Bobrovski.

Lucic, Spooner, Evan Bouchard, 2019 1st to Vancouver for Edler, Sutter and cap dumping Lucic and Spooner for the cap space for the other moves.

It's akin to the phenomena of young aspirant meteorologists wanting to understand the scientific intricacies of devastating storms.

Or consider how some psychologists claim a % of populations attend airshows with the secret desire to witness a catastrophic crash.

There's a common denominator at play, one must assume...

The Coil needs two high end PMD.  Guys that drive the play.  One premier D for 1st pairing, one mid range for 2nd pairing.  Offense is NOT the Oilers' problem!  It is driving the play from the backend, that is the true problem in Coilerland.

The bolded part is so true and obviously was the basis for your bullet points. Their 1st priority has to be to shed salary to give them some flexibility to make deals. Lucic would obviously be their 1st priority but they may also have to reluctantly part with RNH as well if they are going to truly seek top 6 wingers and a top 4 d-man. They have serious cap issues for next year ($5M under cap with only 16 players signed) so I doubt they can trade for these types of players without shedding major salaries. Otherwise, they will only be able to target "potential" top 6 wingers and top 4 d-man by trading their draft picks.

And your 3rd bullet is so, so true...........

Too bad we really don’t have anybody good to spare else I’d want Benning to throw a bone to them.  No one great but just enough to move them a bit higher in the standings (like a goalie or a defenseman perhaps).  Reason?  It’s in our (Canucks) best interest to have Chiapet continue being the GM of the Oilers.:P

Then the Oiler owner could give Chia Pet a five year extension!

Well I just took a long hard look at it, fought through the headache, made a cool xls, got really analytical, corsi'd the &^@# outta those dorks in T.O and 'zona.

Turns out that nothing can be done. No matter what they do, they'll be substantially worse off with every move.

Best solution is putting everyone (except McD, Drais and Nurse) on waivers and just seeing what happens.

They Ain't Going to Like this One

Draisaitl + Lucic + 2020 1st...........14.5 out

for

Hamilton + 2019 2nd.......5.5 in

Edmonton falls this year and gets a top 10 - 1st

If my plan worked out they would have approx. 23.5 in cap space for the summer
