If Bo or Petey go down to injury, we now have a guy that can step into a top six center role while they're out and keep us afloat. Until now, the best options we had if one of them went down were Sutter or Granlund. This is what depth feels like 1

Quite frankly, I think this cap dump take is beyond stupid. A cap dump is a player with no value. Miller clearly had a lot of value around the league. We can't just ignore that because Tampa is up against the cap. Maybe you get the player at a discount if the other GM is desperate but this clearly wasn't the case. 30 other NHL teams would love to have Miller on their team. Did we over pay? Probably. But this narrative that we paid significant assets for someone's cap dump is just plain stupid. We paid significant assets for a very valuable player. 1 7

True. And still, even a lottery pick can turn out to be a lesser player, while a late 1st can turn into a Getzlaf or Perry.. The median value of any pick outside the top 10 is liikely to be significantly less than Miller - that picks value is the median value (average odds overall) at whatever position it turns out to be - until the team makes that pick, and the rest of that contingency depends on their own doing - who they select, how they develop them, etc. I think one of the main axes of this deal is whether the team is willing to 'bet' on it's players - it's young core. A GM can walk into a room and say - 'I made no moves because I have faith in this group as it is' - and perhaps that is a vote of confidence. They can also walk iinto that room and think 'I made no moves because I don't think you guys are capable of making the playoffs in the next few years, so I'm unwilling to part with a decent percentage draft pick in the interim'. What this move says, imo - is that 'I'm willing to spend a first in the next few years for a few reasons - I have faith that you guys can perform and this won't come back to bite us as a lottery pick', and 'I also think this young core, particularly the top line of Pettersson and Boeser - are worth going out and getting that key third piece to maximize their conditions, growth - the right complmentary player to help them be as successful as possible'. I personally like what it says to EP, Boeser, the rest of the core - also to any other players that might consider coming here - and to the veterans and supporting cast foundation who have and continue to put in hard miles in the process of the transition. I have a fairly conservative perspective where spending assets are concerned, but if and when you are going to, make it a player in a context like this - a well-calculated risk imo - and I'm in. Popular Post RWMc1
Tampa gave up two 1st round players and a 2nd round player and a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick for McDonagh and Miller. Basically 3 1st rounders and two 2nd rounders. McDonagh is 30 and Miller is 26. I think people's low valuation on Miller is way off. 2 1

If Miller's going to be at LW, I hope that means Baertschi is on his way out then. Otherwise, they've got no balance at C, with 3 lefties and 1 RH on the 4th line. Assuming Gaudette is in the press box or traded, of course.

The very top of the draft has some VERY good players but I think the draft drops off in quality later in the 1st. At least as far as what's being predicted of 16 year olds thus far. Uh - Sutter, Beagle and Gaudette are all right-handed.... And it isn't determined yet where Miller will play - whether that's on EP's wing - or whether he takes draws and defensive responsibities on that line to lighten the impact on EP. Regardless, it doesn't really matter much. The thing is - they have a right handed sniper in Boeser for that line - so I'm not sure why it would matter much, if at all. 2

If you place the value of the conditional 1st round pick as being worth 50 points per year then that seems reasonable. He has scored 161 points in the last 3 years in a 3rd line checking role, if there is no improvement in his play at all then he is definitely underpaid, by your own standards.
