[Signing] Senators re-sign Thomas Chabot

Recommended Posts

Imagine if Stone, Karlsson, Turris, Duchene et al. decline and turn into Louis on their American teams while Melnyk and his penny pinching ways allow him to build a future powerhouse in the East with all that draft capital and space. Its a possibility but you know with Melnyk he will eventually mess it all up even if everything goes this franchise's way in the next few years. They have always drafted well so we should expect to see Ottawa have some good players but no one should believe Melnyk's promises to spend to the cap.

Wow, that seems like a lot of money for the Sens to spend and a lot of years for a kid to commit to a crappy franchise.

I can only assume no trade protection and they flip him for futures partway through the contract.

No trade protection possible on RFA years.  He has a modified NTC on his 4 UFA years - 10 team no trade.

I doubt they will run their organization this way forever. It's funny that they're classified as a "crappy franchise" because it seems like this is exactly how some wanted us to run our franchise (sell everyone of value for picks and prospects and build through the draft, weaponizing cap space, etc).

Melnyk has said (believe him or not) that he will start spending again when he feels the team is ready to start competing again. This is another sign (along with White) that they are heading in that direction. Considering these guys are willing to sign long term deals could also mean they're buying into it and at worst for them they indeed get their big contract and lock in money and could get traded.

You seem to have forgotten the senators were one game away from the SCF only 2 years ago. A lot can happen in 8 years.

It's weird that they wouldn't pay money for legit superstars but are now willing to spend 64mil on a kid who had one good year?

Sure he looks like a stud..but why didn't some of that money go to building a good team in the first place?

Trying to rationalize Melnyk's spending is futile. The day he sells that team is the day Ottawa fans can rejoice.
