Ur a Towel
Good on them for locking him up now for 8 years. I wonder if all the talk about offer sheets on Chabot scared them into rushing this deal and getting it done now.

Fanuck
Kid has had a promising start to his career. But still a bit of a gamble on that contract imo. Guess you gotta do something to appease the fans in Ott and try to stabilize the franchise.

rekker
Nice signing. This kid is a heck of a player. Wish we had him. 1
Provost
Wow, that seems like a lot of money for the Sens to spend and a lot of years for a kid to commit to a crappy franchise. I can only assume no trade protection and they flip him for futures partway through the contract.
Toews
Imagine if Stone, Karlsson, Turris, Duchene et al. decline and turn into Louis on their American teams while Melnyk and his penny pinching ways allow him to build a future powerhouse in the East with all that draft capital and space. Its a possibility but you know with Melnyk he will eventually mess it all up even if everything goes this franchise's way in the next few years. They have always drafted well so we should expect to see Ottawa have some good players but no one should believe Melnyk's promises to spend to the cap. He has a modified NTC on his 4 UFA years - 10 team no trade.

It's funny that they're classified as a "crappy franchise" because it seems like this is exactly how some wanted us to run our franchise (sell everyone of value for picks and prospects and build through the draft, weaponizing cap space, etc). Melnyk has said (believe him or not) that he will start spending again when he feels the team is ready to start competing again. This is another sign (along with White) that they are heading in that direction. Considering these guys are willing to sign long term deals could also mean they're buying into it and at worst for them they indeed get their big contract and lock in money and could get traded.

A lot can happen in 8 years.
JM_
Good for him, he's been good player and maybe he'll grow into this deal, but in no way has he earned that deal yet. wow. HKSR
Man, imagine losing a defenceman like Karlsson, only to have another develop within the system named Chabot. That's a luxury that Ottawa needs to build off of.
mephnick
It's weird that they wouldn't pay money for legit superstars but are now willing to spend 64mil on a kid who had one good year? Sure he looks like a stud..but why didn't some of that money go to building a good team in the first place?

The day he sells that team is the day Ottawa fans can rejoice.

Elias Pettersson
Averaged less than a point a game in junior and had had one good year in the NHL and he gets a max contract for $8 million AAV? Wow that's crazy. Also, he didn't even play a full season last year. Talk about a risky contract. But then I realized it's Ottawa and Melnyk so now it makes total sense. Coconuts
Bit of a gamble but he put up the numbers last season and Ottawa desperately needs a star to market. He'll be their #1 and likely get as many minutes as he can handle. Edited September 19, 2019 by Coconuts
