GLASSJAW Posted March 26, 2019 Share Posted March 26, 2019 (edited) i got Crave recently, and it's pretty expensive ($20 for movies + live). but man, there's so much content on there I want to watch or re-watch. it's definitely a good investment for at least a few months. plus HBO has a pretty good lineup this year. because you can have multiple logins, I just split the cost with another person and we share. edit: but I will say the Crave app on my tv (Samsung smart tv) is maybe the worst app of all time, like it's garbage. Monty Posted March 29, 2019 Share Posted March 29, 2019 Free Solo Won the Academy Award for Best documentary this year. I haven’t seen the others, so I can’t say if it’s better than the others. I will say that it’s not the best documentary I’ve seen. Not by a long shot. It is impressive to see the mental toughness and athleticism it takes to free climb like he did. That said, obviously what he’s doing is incredibly stupid. While he didn’t die, chances are he will someday. As they said in the film, all free solo climbers end up dying. There’s also something up with him, mentally. His father had Aspergers, so it’s possible he has some variation of that, because he comes across like a giant asshole. I’d say it’s worth watching, but more for the stupidity of what he did. EDIT: The more I’ve thought about this, the more I’m liking it. Again, not even close to the best documentary I’ve seen. I think the fact it won an Academy Award this year is more a reflection of how poor the lineup was, as I’ve seen runner ups in previous years that are far better (ie: Winter on Fire and What Happened Miss Simon lost to Amy ). However, I think what bothered me while watching it was Alex Honnold, and not understanding him as a person. The more I’ve thought about him, the more I get him. If he had a wife and kids to think about, then he certainly couldn’t do what he was doing. But very impressive. If this is playing in a theatre nearby, especially an IMAX, then it’s a must see. We have a 110” screen + all the necessary trimmings to watch it as it’s intended, so I’d highly recommend watching in the best possible environment you can. Obviously the band was nowhere near as awful as Bundy, but with the exception of Mars, they all seemed like piece of trash woman abusers whose drug use resulted in other people dying. I wish the producers/director had the balls to call them for what they were. Did anybody need a Motley Crue biopic? I don't think so. So, if you're going to do one, at least have integrity to set the right tone. D-Money Posted April 9, 2019 Share Posted April 9, 2019 (edited) Fahrenheit 11/9 - Divided/10 I used to be a pretty big fan of Michael Moore's stuff. From Roger & Me, to Bowling For Columbine, and everything in-between - his movies (and books, and even television series) generally brought up important issues, stuck up for the "little guy", and wrapped it up in an entertaining way. But then he went ultra-political, and started relying more on cheap tricks, hearsay, and gimmickry to push his political agenda. He pretty much lost me at Fahrenheit 9/11, although I did watch (and enjoy) Sicko. This movie is pretty much the worst - and best - of Michael Moore. On the one hand, his handling of Trump is at times beyond ridiculous. Spoiler He essentially accuses Trump of incest with his daughter, and goes to the point of playing the audio of excerpts of Trump's speeches over video clips of Hitler. And if this would have been the whole movie, I would say it's a definite pass. But then, in the middle of the film, Moore stretches the narrative to include the story of the Flint water crisis. Now, I was pretty much unaware of this story, and when the details were laid out for me I was floored. This portion of the film was captivating, heart-wrenching, and some of Moore's best work in years. If you think there is a limit to what a 1st-world, democratic government will subject its citizens to, prepare to be shocked and horrified. If this was the focus of the documentary, it would be an absolute must-watch. So, if you have Amazon Prime, I recommend skipping ahead to the part on Flint, and give it a go. It is intertwined with some solid footage related to the work of the teenage survivors of the Parkland shooting, which is also worthy viewing. As usual, Bruce Willis sleepwalks through his performance. James McAvoy is the only reason to watch. But the movie is really poorly written.
