Kellan Lain Talk

Lain's fight at about 45 sec in. Was a bit defensive trying to keep his balance while not getting hit, but he's a big guy who will get better at holding his own as he fills out more as well. If he wants to fight more often, he'll likely have to work on his fighting ability though.

Lain has been on fire lately. 5 goals in his last 8 games.

This is the offensive side of his game the Canucks were hoping would come out. Good to see.

It would be a boon for the Canucks if Lain developed enough offensive game to be a 15 goal scorer. It looks like he's getting there.

We need big men like Lain/Archibald/Grenier with foot speed, Sestito over-commited and was out of control when he hit Kassian, we don't need unecessary hits just the ones that are there in the flow of the play, over-enthusiasm and out of control hitting will kill us in the playoffs and will lead to penalties and/or odd man rushes the other way. Plus were still too small with Dalpe/ Richardson/ Ferrari, How long have we been wanting to add size? I have to say it is just plain wierd the way we've been manhandled by bigger teams but refuse to add big young forwards to help, and Sestito on the pp was the only smart move addressing size :picard:

Gotta agree with this: the Ferriero callup was particularly bizarre when Archibald was available and in form. At least he's up now. If Lain can keep up his recent play, he deserves a look too.

The hit by Sestito where Kassian got injured was an example of him chasing the hit. You want to be aggressive, but to have two forwards tied up near the other team's goal line as they're breaking out of the zone is generally a bad idea. Even if you hit the one player there, they could get the pass away and then it's a 4 on 3 the other way. If you don't hit him and take out your own guy (which is totally possible) then it's a 5 on 3.

I haven't seen if Lain is also guilty of chasing the hit, but he certainly does look for the physical play. If he can do that in responsible situations to up the physical play, he'll be successful with his other talents.

Said this like a dozen times already. Ferriero was recalled because it was supposed to be a 1 game recall because of Higgins flu. Why make a blossoming prospect travel to come up for one game. Archibald just got recalled and it likely signals a move or a long-ish injury to Booth or Weise.

Both healthy scratches.

Both healthy scratches.

Aware it's a healthy scratch. Was just listing other potential possibilities, especially if Arch continues his strong play from before and Burrows and Edler returns (both were skating with the team today)

Yeah, fair enough but the counter-argument is that we were playing two pretty large and physical teams at the time, and Archibald's (or Lain's) game would have helped us deal with that. Even with Higgins back, we still have a depleted roster, not to mention the recent downturn in the play of Weise and Booth, so it didn't have to be a 1-game callup. Anyway, the main point is that we should be icing a lineup that allows us to hold our own against bigger and tougher teams. Putting some of our younger players into those situations can't be any worse than what we saw this weekend, and might be the baptism of fire that shows they belong.

Well, that baptism of fire could be what they really need, or just piling on while we're struggling a bit and destroy their confidence.

Aware it's a healthy scratch. Was just listing other potential possibilities, especially if Arch continues his strong play from before and Burrows and Edler returns (both were skating with the team today)

If you were aware it was a healthy scratch then you wouldn't be suggesting injury as a reason. We've seen trades as a reason for healthy scratches before, but what really is the likelihood that Booth or Weise would be involved. No, since we didn't play well the last couple games it's more likely to be a small shake up.

I wouldn't be surprised if he swaps places with Archibald.....Archie was just one of the cheering section during the game. Missing in action. If Lain comes up he better take his chance

Archie just wasn't as involved in this game.

He got into one scrum but didn't do much. I just don't think he's the type of player to start crap unless he's really angry or involved in the game.

Despite being new to the rough stuff, Lain knows how to respond.

I remember in the preseason, Shinkaruk got roughed up by Nurse and sestito yelledto threaten Nurse. A few seconds later, Lain caught Nurse with a pretty big hit and looked back as if he wanted to fight.

Not taking anything away from archibald though.

As much as fans are calling for Grenier to go up I would look at Lain as an option over Archy. Just imagine Sestito-Lain-Kassian. It would require Lain losing a front tooth to fit in on that line but come April an awesome option in a physical game.

Maybe a grease pencil to blacken out one tooth? Seriously, though, Kas's days on the 4th line are over. He's got the message from Torts about how he needs to play, and has the kind of skill we need in our top six.
