Kellan Lain Talk

Watch this kid to take over from Sestito sooner or later... Lain is versatile too playing C or LW... Sestito is simply too slow and limited in skills... I would also promote Archibald too as he got more potential to help this team.

I beg to differ, Sestito isn't that slow and he's got good hands. Scored over 40 goals in junior. Plus why do you think he's here?

I like what Dalpe is starting to bring. The 4th line is getting more ice because of Dalpe's progress as a defensive player. Lain..Dalpe.. Gaunce, Mallett some competition for that spot

Dalpe's defensive development is mostly due to him being fast as hell and constantly keeping his feet moving. I like what he brings and I think he can bring much more than just a fourth liner.

Progressing? Doesn't Mallet only have like 1 point and 9 PIM in 18 games?

yes, progressing. the mallet-lain-defazio line has been fantastic in the last 5-6 games. they hit and create chances. they deserve more points for what they've done on the ice, and if they keep it up the percentages will catch up to them. Lain keeps scoring (opened the scoring tonight) mallet had an assist in the last game and is playing his game consistantly the last month or so. thats been the knock on him; not consistantly playing the way he is capable of. The whole team had a bad start but it's been a good stretch of play recently and these guys have been a big part of it.

Sestito is simply a waste of a roster spot.. why can't the Canucks management be more flexible? Archibald deserves a chance NOW... and Lain will develop to be a userful 4th line centre soon. As for Dalpe, this is just not the right place for him... he needs a weaker team that can offer him a 2nd or 3rd line minutes!

i was going to post about a line like that but you beat me to it! i think archie is ready so if lain and mallet keep progressing that would be a fantastic 4th line.

They're all tough guys who play physical, and each has their own talents to add to a 4th line energy/checking role. Archibald likes to shoot and rush/forecheck, Mallet works hard at both ends of the ice, and Lain is a defensive/faceoff specialist that's finding his touch around the net. 6'1", 6'3" and 6'6" is a lot to deal with if they can be responsible against other NHL lines.

You need muscle in this league. A guy like Sestito would have come in handy in the spring of '11. Archibald isn't that guy.

I'd like to point out a fact to the Sestito peanut gallery. He's playing in the NHL right now for reasons others are not. Sestito has been analyzed by professionals , with showing credentials showing they know their stuff. More than I and more than most on this site.

Tom Sestito is on a good team. This guy isn't chopped liver and he is the only heavy weight Vancouver sports. Lain might be the guy down the road but he's got to be more consistent at the AHL level.

If Lain was ready he'd be called up already.

Go Utica!

Sestito is slow and struggles to keep up with the play and rarely gets his hits on the forecheck, Archie's foot speed allows him to get more and better hits, unless were in a fighters match up I would rather have the better skater in Archie. Maybe we won't have the best heavyweight but we'll be better whistle to whistle and have a 4th line that can take a regular shift/ minutes as opposed to the guarded minutes Torts is giving them now.

Yes but Sestito is substantially more talented with the puck (check junior scoring), and whether credited for it or not, has some hockey IQ. He's playing fine, plus outweighs Archibald by 15 to 20 lbs. Bear in mind, Sestito is playing with Weise who is very fast, his actual role is to fore-check and win board battles and Weise (now that he has Sestito) only fights when required. Add some combination of Dalpe or Wesh at center who again are fast. So the line has speed plus can have a legit heavy. That's a well rounded 4th line.

Archibald is better on the fore-check and in the corners, but not going to stand up the same in fights because of his size. He was brought up to duplicate Weise's role when he went down and thats better suited than an enforcer role for him. He looked good at it and its likely what he will inherit when Weise's contract runs through...

Good argument, but there may be another side to it. Archibald actually got a look on the 3rd line when he was up. He may have been subbing for Weise, but it was when Weise was playing with Kassian and Richardson. And Archibald looked pretty good there: he drove play well and had a few assists. I wonder if he isn't back in Utica because the brass sees him having a higher ceiling than a 4th line player. Maybe it hasn't been working out that way since he isn't lighting it up, but it may have been the plan just the same.

As the year 2013 comes to a close, Utica Comet Kellan Lain looks to continue his recent success into the New Year. The rookie center has nine points throughout 29 games in his first full season pro (5-4-9), with three of those goals coming in his last five games. Those three goals also started off the scoring for the Comets, as Lain got them on the board first three times in a row. “It’s always important to get off to a strong start and getting the first goal is huge for momentum,” Lain stated. “The first goal is always crucial.”

A native of Oakville, Ontario, Lain played 13 games with the Chicago Wolves last season and racked up six penalty minutes. He has also served as an enforcer for the Comets this season, totaling 73 PIMs in 29 games played. When asked how his transition went from college level hockey to the pro level, Lain explained, “It’s a huge jump. The [pro] game is played at a very high speed and you have less time to make decisions on the ice. Players are older and more experienced and know the game, so every day, you need to come to the rink and focus on getting better.” Lain’s biggest focus since turning pro has been on his consistency. He explained how challenging it is to constantly put points on the board, and that becoming stronger both mentally and physically will help him reach a higher level of play.

Lain also credited some of his recent success to his linemates, Brandon DeFazio and fellow rookie Alex Mallet. “DeFazio and Mallet have been playing great, and we really feed off of each other,” Lain said. “We try to bring a lot of energy to the team and wear down our opponents by playing fast and physical.” DeFazio has totaled nine points throughout this season (2-7-9) and Mallet has two (1-1-2).

It is apparent that things are looking up for the Comets, who are looking more cohesive each and every game. Lain credits this towards the team becoming more familiar with one another, stating, “It took some time for us to come together as a team, as many of us had never played together before. We know how our team needs to play to succeed and we just need to focus on the specifics going forward.”

One of three siblings, Lain credits his whole family with helping him reach his goal of playing pro. “I owe everything I have and where I am at to my parents and family,” he said. “My parents provided me with every opportunity possible to succeed and have been there to support me every step of the way. I am very close with my brother and sister…they are very encouraging and were great role models for me growing up.”

With 2014 already upon us, things are looking bright for Lain, who is only just beginning his professional hockey career.

He's a prospect I've been keeping an eye on, in part due to his size but also his age since he has a jump on our newer draft picks in development. He has a lot of transferrable qualities that'll work in the NHL, it's just whether he can contribute anything offensively that will decide were he plays and for how many minutes.

I'll put it out there again, but with Lain, Mallet and DeFazio playing well together of late, I can see a future for Lain and Mallet to play with Archibald at the NHL level in coming years.

Mallet maybe still has a ways to go, so whether someone else fits in there like Kenins, Blomstrand or even Fox I don't know. Everyone I think of that could fit there are left handed shots though, and while Mallet lists as a C/LW he's right handed so that would be a good backup as a center with the other shot. Maybe Weise (or in the near future if he hasn't locked in higher in the lineup, Kassian) would be an option as well, but Lain and Archibald will be solid bottom 6 options in the next year or two.

Not that I'd want these players stuck on the 4th line, but Dalpe in our current lineup and maybe Grenier in the AHL could work in on that extra wing spot, but there aren't too many right wings (or particularly right handed shots) I can think of off the top of my head to put with them that are in the NHL or close to it.

Do you think there'll be a few changes come the play-offs. IMO Archibald showed a lot during his stint with the big club. I can't imagine Sestito playing once the play-offs come around. He's getting better IMO but his skating will always hold him back. So some one will be brought up

I don't know that they bring anyone in like Lain or Archibald to replace Sestito directly unless there are injuries. Maybe we see Utica's season end (or one of our juniors or overseas players' seasons end) and they get into the line up by virtue of being a high end skill player, but they'd likely have to be on a roll at that point to knock anyone off the current roster.
