His play to start the AHL season is pretty nuts! Its not like Eriksson's play has been bad or anything, just that he's letting a few goals in.

Markstrom is completely lights out! If you're the other team, if Utica scores a goal on you with him in net, might as well hit the showers and get an early night lol ::D

Markstrom Named CCM/AHL Goalie of the Month:

The American Hockey League announced today that Jacob Markstrom of the Utica Comets has been selected as the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for October.

Markstrom made a run at the AHL record books during October and finished the month with a 4-0-1 record, a 0.99 goals-against average, a .963 save percentage and three shutouts while stopping 131 of 136 shots in five starts.

Markstrom made his first appearance of the season on Oct. 11 at Toronto and stopped 24 of 25 shots in Utica’s 2-1 victory. He followed that up with three consecutive shutouts, blanking his former San Antonio teammates (28 saves) on Oct. 17, Adirondack (29 saves) on Oct. 22 and Toronto (27 saves) on Oct. 25. Markstrom extended his shutout streak to 238:08 – a little more than 30 minutes shy of the all-time league record – before allowing a goal to Binghamton on Oct. 31, and finished the night with 23 stops in a 4-3 overtime loss.

A second-round pick (31st overall) by Florida in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Markstrom owns a record of 65-58-8 with a 2.58 GAA, a .919 save percentage and 10 shutouts in 136 career AHL appearances with Utica, San Antonio and Rochester. The 24-year-old native of Gavle, Sweden, has also played 47 games in the National Hockey League with Florida and Vancouver. Markstrom was acquired by the Canucks in the Mar. 4, 2014, trade that sent Roberto Luongo to the Panthers.

In recognition of his achievement, Markstrom will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Comets home game.

He was also the AHL goalie of the month for February prior to us trading for him.

Wow... we are lucky he didn't get snatched on waivers.

4 SO's in 6 games?! Are you kidding me?!

This puts Benning in the (un)fortunate position of having to move one of Markstrom, Lack, or Miller before next season starts since he will never clear waivers again.

I look forward to whatever happens and have faith our team will make a good decision.

Just an aside that likely isn't worth it's own thread, but New Jersey is putting Clemmenson on waivers today. He's come in in relief in two games (Schneider's started all 11 games so far) and has allowed four goals on 17 shots for a .765 save percentage and 6.49 GAA. Not impressive at all.

Devils to waive Clemmensen

Yeah, that's me suggesting they consider a Larsson trade for Markstrom. We'd have to add another piece, but maybe if they aren't sold on their goalies in the minors.

I heard a scathing review of the NJ goalie coaching system by Kevin Woodley the other night. Sounds like a bad situation for Schneider.

Yeah, I don't know what kind of system they have set up, but they haven't really had anything from their goalie pipeline since Brodeur. That's likely a bad sign either of drafting or development, or both.

i don't think they even bothered to think about goaltending until suddenly brodeur was on his way out. then they suddenly scrambled and were like , WTF do we do now?

Grabbing Cory for just a 9th overall was pretty slick for a scramble move.

it would have been, if they had a decent support system in place for him to continue to develop properly. as it is right now it's them overplaying and hanging out to dry Cory because they want him to be brodeur 2.0 and them lacking the team systems in front of him to support it. they clearly did scramble when they went for cory, as nobody pays that much for a goalie anymore.

That's because no goalie of his calibre was available in recent memory.

You need at least 3 goalies in case of injuries; Miller, Lack, and Markstrom are locks; Eriksson and Cannata are the only 2 we should consider trade bait.

Even if only one goalie gets hurt, you are down to 2 and Markstrom will be a fine addition to the big team in that case.

Lack and Markstrom are 2A and 2B at this point.

We should use one of Lack or Markstrom along with our 1st to move up at the draft if there is a team that needs goaltending in the draft range we would like to pick in.

Preferably Lack starts playing well and we move him.

OR if lack has a horrible year and he is able to be snuck down through waivers like was markstrom this year.
